What is so special about Eric Whitacre Choir?

I mean, i´m not trying to be a hater here. I saw all the videos and demos, articulation list, and nothing justifies this purchase at this price (even with 40% off) for me. On top of that, it is not NKS / Kontakt, which is a little disadvantage for me (nothing that would keep me from buying a good library tho).

My question is because i see a lot of praise to this library and you always give good tips over here. Am i missing something? What aspect of this library makes you love it?

If it is that good, i don´t want to loose this opportunity and i´m the need of a good / versatile choir (I have choir in Arks 1 and 2, Kontakt Factory Library and Logic).

It’s got great sounding and a large variety of morphing longs that are especially effective at low dynamic levels. It works well with textural libraries like the EVOs, BDT, Time Macro, etc. You can get some idea of it with the choir freebie that is offered in the Spitfire Lab. If you like that and want a large variety of that kind of thing, EWC does it and the only thing I know that is remotely like it is the choir patches in Time Macro (and those are much more limited). It also has its own EVO that is very inspiring.

I do wish EWC had more shorts and that its legato worked better on moving eighth notes at a moderate tempo. (Quarter notes are about as fast as I’ve been able to get it to go and sound flowing.) Those additions would make it much more versatile.

MMMs and Ohs too! All of the longs, I think, have evolutions to them, like the sample in the lab instrument, so it's a bit more than just a bunch of Aahs and Oohs (the long length of the samples is also one reason it's a 300GB install). Then there are some fine rhythmic patches (na-na-na, etc.) as well. Is it worth the price? That would depend on what you want to do with a choir. The choir in Time Macro offers something in the neighborhood of EWC. So if you want a somewhat less expensive alternative that also gives you lots of other textural instruments that's where I'd go.

Without many shorts and with what I think is a somewhat sluggish legato, EWC does not do standard choir stuff all that well. So it really is a niche library. So far I find that I use it mostly layered into a texture rather than featuring it as such. That may make it a pricey layering instrument but I find it can add a wonderful touch to the texture.

Down to two options...

Now i only have to choose between BDT and Solo Strings!

I want intimate, dry, heart-like, strings (and textures) but the flexibility of solo strings is really welcome since i like my solo strings but i´m not all that convinced (basically 8dio´s ISS, that i like for texture or quartets, but not quite for an expressive solo and Joshua Bell Violin, that i like a lot, but its only a violin).

I will pick just one.

Any recommendations?

Oh, and i also have SCS.

Aha, I actually have BDT, Tundra AND Olafur Arnalds Evolutions already! They're all brilliant and all my past spending is starting to pay off - I can no longer me tempted by such material because I already have it! Perhaps I really will one day be free of VI GAS!!

For me the question is - do I get Spitfire Studio Brass and Woods (Core) which are great for HD space for me (only have 70gb left on my HD and they only take 19gb) or do I go for Cinematic Studio Brass. If I go for CSB (which is 36gb) I probably won't have room to fit the Woodwinds on when they're release later this year. I love Spitfire but the demos for their Studio Brass just don't do anything for me and my motto is always trust your ears, but I think it may be just Paul Thompson's demo style for Brass isn't my kind of thing. I love the sound of CSB in the demos I've heard of that, but I'm really just beginning to learn orchestral composition and it's a lot of ££ and GB if I don't end up using it that much!

Well I do have the BDT and its a different kind of beast. Its an instrument – you have to learn how to play it – but its rewarding. There is nothing quite like it, the textures and feel is something special. On the subject of Cinematic Studio Brass, I can only say its a must. The consistency and quality of the sounds i superb. As is the dynamics – exceptional i my view. This is my go to library when it comes to brass – close or big epic – the mics handle your needs for any occasion.

Though I have some different libraries handling percussion, Im in for the Spitfire perc, basic but they seem reliable. Any thought or insight concerning that one?

Thank you Moma, lI keep reading a lot of good things about CSB. I don’t suppose you’ve had the chance to compare it to Spitfire’s Studio Brass?

After experiencing the exceptional CSS and CSSS I went for the CSB. The one thing I have read in other musicians reviews is that CSB, in comparison with SSB, has a unique consistency and quality to each and every note. That paired with the amazing dynamics is what made it a go to library for many picky individuals. I have done some research concerning the SSB and although its seem to be a good library, it simply cannot match the close and big sounds of CBS – you can tweek it to what you like. And don´t get me wrong, I own several top notch libraries from Spitfire. The studio woodwinds is a treat! But when it comes to finding a genuine workhorse for brass I would go for CSB.

I own both libraries, and would definitely go with (only) CSB if I could do it all over again.
