Dude!!!!!! Welcome back!
Congrats on getting a well-deserved attention from VSL and thanks for the walkthrough !Almost all of my music is unfinished because I'm rather chaotic and tend to be too critical of most of the stuff I write, so I usually abandon it after a while to try something new. That means there isn't much to show sadly.
Anyway, I created a new mockup to see how well I could shape a relatively difficult classical piece with Duality Strings using all the different legato/vibrato styles, note attacks, short notes etc.
It was a lot of polishing, but it was nice to find out what can be achieved with this library.
It's the exposition of the first movement of Mozart's 40th symphony: View attachment Mozart 40 Duality.mp3
Our friend @muziksculp is back. He’s always been very active on the forum and always inquisitive about new releases, especially with string libraries. So it feels strange reading new threads about string libraries and not hear from him. When he had not posted in a while, I read that he was banned or something so I was genuinely surprised and happy to see him posting again.Who's back???
Mozart. Of course.Who's back???
Thanks for sharing your wisdom @Dan! Incredible Mozart mock-up and excellent walkthrough.
Thank you for your kind words! If you haven't seen it: In the video description is a link to a Logic file where I converted all input from my articulation set to proper keyswitches (I hope the file works), so anyone who bought Duality Strings or got the demo license should be able to play it back. Audio files for woodwinds and brass are included for those who don't have Synchronized Woodwinds or Synchron Brass. The are no effects plugins though, just the direct sound.Congrats on getting a well-deserved attention from VSL and thanks for the walkthrough !
@Dan congratulations for your Mozart mock-up, I like it a lot and I think that I can learn a lot from it.Thank you for your kind words! Oh yeah that would have been a good idea now that you mention it. Unfortunately I am away from my computer until next weekend as I am traveling. Maybe someone with Logic could help you out and create one out of the file? Otherwise I could do it once I'm back home in 8 days.@Dan congratulations for your Mozart mock-up, I like it a lot and I think that I can learn a lot from it.
Unfortunately I'm on windows with Studio One and I can't use the logic file. Is it possible to have a MIDI file version too?
That'd be awesome. Us Cubase folk could get a lot out of it as well. Thanks for your willingness to share!Oh yeah that would have been a good idea now that you mention it. I'm not at my Mac right now, but this should be fairly simple. All (dimension) controllers can be modified to your liking. You can change the VelXF behaviour at patch level. So I'm really liking the velocity control of the attack of long and legato notes in the new "VelXF + Velocity Control" preset but I hate the fact that velocity no longer controls dynamic for shorts and the modwheel does instead, compared to "VelXF sus - MOD". I already posted this on the VSL forums but is there any chance of getting a "VelXF sus + Velocity Control" preset that keeps the velocity control for attack for longs but uses velocity for dynamic for shorts like "VelXF sus - MOD"? This to me would be the ultimate preset. This is more a question for @Ben
Creating stress patterns of shorts is a lot easier with velocity controlling dynamic than with the modwheel where you would keep having to move it up and down again to accomplish the same thing.
I know how to do this, I've already customized the presets to do this before I posted. It's a lot more work than you say because I wanted to make sure that I mapped the velocity->attack the same as the "VelXF + Velocity Crossfade", and the "VelXF + Velocity Crossfade" has a curvature (it's not just a 45 degree upward slope) and it seems to be impossible to copy and paste a controller curve and there is also some duplication of the "Normal" technique for any recordings that don't have a specific "slow" attack recorded so that the remaining three still map the same way. However I still wanted velocity to map exactly the same to attacks as it did when using the "VeXF + Velocity Crossfade" patch. So essentially what I had to do was start with the VelXF + Velocity Crossfade preset, turn off velocity crossfade for all of the short articulations, and then recreate the trills like they are in the VelXF sus + MOD preset and change the "Direction" mapping for runs and glissandi. It was a fair bit of work, taking me some hours to go through everything. I'm not even 100% sure that I didn't make mistakes so I'm going to have to carefully go through everything again. But I think the result is probably more accurate than if I started with "VelXF sus" and went from there trying to eyeball the curve to make sure it was an exact match and then went through all of the attacks to make sure that the list always matched.I'm not at my Mac right now, but this should be fairly simple. I would use the regular "VelXF sus" preset and then set up a dimension controller for the attacks which is triggered by velocity. Is it this what you're looking for?
Hm... I think I don't understand what you want. Never expected so much work. Thought it could be done with just a few clicks.I know how to do this, I've already customized the presets to do this before I posted. The reason that I'm asking for an official preset is not that I can't do this. It is because I don't want to have to repeat this process every single time that VSL updates the library. Every time they update a library that I have, I delete my user presets and recreate them from scratch so that I don't miss out on any enhancements they make by using my old presets. Normally that just involves a couple changes, but here it involved some hours of work. Also, I think that I am far from the only person who likes the behaviour of having velocity control dynamic of short articulations, and it seems silly to me to require many other library users to independently repeat the process I've done in order to benefit from the new functionality with the legatos without losing this capability with the shorts.
Basically the new "VelXF + Velocity Crossfade" presets are an enhanced version of "VelXF - MOD" but with velocity control of the long note attacks. I'm asking for an equivalent enhanced version of "VelXF sus - MOD". I still might even modify these for my own use slightly with my own user presets, but this will save me a lot of time. And based on the popularity of the "VelXF sus - MOD" presets, I think they would benefit many others as well - I wouldn't be asking for this if it wasn't something that I thought others would want and find useful.

I too had initially thought it would be easiest to just take the "VelXF sus + MOD" and add the velocity control to longs there, and it might have been if I didn't care about how different velocity values actually mapped to attack. However, I want to be absolutely sure that the mapping is exactly the same as it is with "VelXF + Velocity Control" so that if I copy and paste MIDI data consisting of long notes from one to the other that suddenly I don't have attacks changing as a result. The custom velocity curve employed by "VelXF + Velocity Control" made this too much work, too much eyeballing would have been involved and then having to run every velocity value through from 1-127 to make sure it was correct, and the duplication of the "Normal" attack for those specific articulations that lack a "Slow" option would also impact the mapping. In the end it was easier and less error-prone to take the "VelXF + Velocity Control" and adjust it to be more like "VelXF sus + MOD" rather than vice-versa.Hm... I think I don't understand what you want. Never expected so much work. Thought it could be done with just a few clicks.![]()
Ed - Can you clarify how Dorico 5 fixed that for you? I'm using Dorico 5 and working on my template right now with Duality Strings and other libraries but I'm wondering what feature you are using to get everything to balance properly at the different dynamics as I may have missed a new feature that would help me with this process. I already have the balance good as is but want to fine-tune it now.Dorico 5 fixed that with the stage setup and tweaking the dynamic range. So now the brass ,strings and ww balance properly at the right dynamics.
Huh, this is not an angle that I had ever considered before. Is it typical to have to re-create user presets when a Synchron lib is updated? I would have thought that they'd take care to make sure that the samples were named consistently across the updates so that presets wouldn't have to get re-worked.... or maybe you are talking about different enhancements (not to the recordings themselves?)The reason that I'm asking for an official preset is not that I can't do this. I'm talking about different enhancements, like to the tuning/humanization/mix. Like one day with Synchron-ized winds I went into my template and found that there was a mixer preset missing that I expected to be there (99 MIR unprocessed) because I bought MIR a while back and wanted to use this mixer preset. I found it was missing from my user preset but was there in the official preset. I never deleted it though, so I assumed that it was because I made my user preset a long time ago before that mixer preset existed in the official preset. Since then I've always deleted and recreated my user presets whenever there is a new version so that I'm not accidentally missing out on new things.Huh, this is not an angle that I had ever considered before.
