AIR Studios Reverb Discussion Thread

I did a quick short test with Cinematic Studio Strings. It's just the default "The Hall" preset the plugin opens with, all the sections running through the same instance and set quite wet to hear the hall well;

Want to clarify so you are sending all instruments to one instance? Right now, I have seventh heaven reverbs on individual tracks and cinematic rooms (very little) and then I have Cinematic Rooms on the master bus, so all instruments fit in the Room/Hall. (Glue together)

Can I use Spitfire in similar fashion where I want all the instruments and busses that go to Master Bus and then use Air Studios reverb Hall preset on the Main Stereo Bus OR is this not what the product's intent was and will not have the same effect? I also use CSS thus interested.

It's pretty hard to compare reverbs head to head with the send level as their output level can be vastly different depending on the plugin, but in general convolutions don't blend stuff as well or handle ER as well as algorithmic reverbs imo, it tends to sound like a separate layer.

To be absolutely sure and make a real test you'd need to match the long term RMS of the wet signals and adjust the send levels accordingly.

Also I guess you have many settings you can tweak in Air Reverb that can vastly change the sound.

Hard to beat a good algo reverb like VSS3 or cinematic rooms though..

A quick example of Cinematic Studio Strings with Air Studios reverb. I only used the CSS close mics. In a real world situation you would want to use the CSS room and ambient mics as well. But then you'd want to turn off the early reflections in Air Studios Reverb. For demonstration purposes, I only used the close signal here.

Here is the track without any reverb:

The exact same track, with one instance of Air Studios Reverb on each instrument track. I have adjusted the source settings for each section to reflect the radiation patterns of the sections:

And the same again, with more reverb. The reverb is exaggerated here, so you can clearly hear what the plugin is doing:

I love your string writing Muk, so gentle and intense at the same time- Heart touching!
It sounds lovely with the reverb. Thank you for sharing!

No, It's included in Protools but you can buy it for less than 30$ with the old Creative Fx Collection Plus. https://www.airmusictech.com/effects/creative-effects-collection-plus.html (it's working with AU and VST too, not just with the AAX format). Still, you can do so much more with the reverb from Spitfire or Berlin Studio. This comparaison was just a try to match "one" sound that @HotCoffee posted. (And also to show that those who already bought Berlin Studio maybe haven't bought it for nothing). Still, although I have lots of reverbs (Cinematic Rooms, Seventh Heaven, Altiverb, Paragon, Valhalla Vintageverb, etc...), I could be interested by Berlin Studio (as I own many OT libraries)... and AIR Studios Reverb :sneaky:)
Hmmmm… So you are saying, I have to purchase a VST2 plug-in. I’m not sure. I think that might somehow be worse. Why do you hate me? I would try to fight you over this, but I’d probably lose. I don’t want to visit my mother this weekend with a swollen eye. I’m Internet angry and silently thinking mean thoughts to myself because of the predicament you have put me in. I hope you’re happy.

I prefer the sound of number two with that passage over the other contenders. The only positive to the situation, is the fact that I might already own a license for this, with the MPC X.

So what is your first impression on Air Studios Reverb?

The meme hall reverb is an incredibly specific product. For general reverb I cannot ever see this as a replacement but blending with other libraries in the hall has proven to be helpful to me already. I did some tests comparing mundane things such as vocals and stuff and I can't really tell a meaningful difference unless I'm trying to match to Lyndhurst

Altiverb offers positioning, tremendous flexibility in sonic control, and AudioEase's huge and varied library of impulse responses. As a long-time owner who manages to find everything that I need in a convolution reverb in Altiverb, I'm must confess I'm not that excited by this Spitfire offering.

But that's just me. If it's Air you're after, this is the reverb for you!

So you are saying I have to get ProTools now? This is getting really expensive. I think I’m going to eventually stop paying attention to this thread. SMH.
No, you can buy the AIR FX collection at Plugin Boutique. The whole thing is usually under $100 for all the effects. They are decent but dated.

Edit: Sorry, it is actually under $30 right now for just the effects.

I think anyone who gets this or berlin studio should definitely invest in a depth/diffusion plugin of some kind for close dry recordings.. Proximity is a free plugin and works reasonably for this. Panagement or sp2016 will also work. Roomwidener from jdfactory. Basically it will give you the effect of pushing the sound back a bit so that when it's blended with these reverbs, it sounds more natural. @Joël Dollié has discussed this topic on his YouTube channel.
I have always been recommending RoomWidener by the man Joël himself. Terrific plugin and just makes everything sit in the reverb naturally instead of feeling like a tail slapped onto a sound. I use it in conjunction with Panbox from Joël again which has a smart pan feature, perfect for panning wet sounds. Panbox tries to pan only the close and direct sound, leaving the room information unpanned so it sounds more natural. The best solution for virtual instruments.

I have the exact same questions as @robgb.

If anyone using this can be so kind to answer these questions based on using this product it would be much appreciated :emoji_grinning:
I use it as a bus reverb. I can understand others sentiments that it works best as a reverb for a particular sound, especially a dry sound because of all the placement you can do. I would agree, but using it as a bus for a general reverb is amazing too because you get the Air sound. I don't deal with a lot of absolutely dry recordings so Air works perfectly for getting all my samples to be placed in Air. I don't use a lot of Spitfire stuff. At least for the main orchestra, so getting all my mishmash of libraries to sit inside Air is a nice thing to have 😃
