VSL Mystery release??? (UPDATE: Synchron Duality Strings)

That's the most impressive thing I heard when listening to Duality Strings demos.
I think it has a lot do with the mic choices. This one seems to put more emphases on the close mic in room B witch is what's really interesting about this library. As oppose to almost all other demos, examples that mostly use use room A it seems. Just seems like a missed opportunity.
 
What are your thoughts on CPU usage for Duality Strings?

I bought the Standard edition recently and just finished my new template in VEP 7 with 5 instances, one for each string section. Every instance has 13 channels of Synchron so 65 channels in total (every channel routed to its own output aswell)

I'm not a huge fan of doing a ton of key-switching on every track and prefer to have more separate channels / outputs, also for better mixing control. I've loaded this template on my new slave pc running a fast NVME ssd, 16gb ram and a Ryzen 5600H, a pretty decent 6-core cpu, similar in power to my master pc (4800H) Not a lot of ram for a slave, I know, but I'm planning on upgrading to 64gb after some more testing.

However, ram is not the issue, it's pretty light on ram-use, but it eats up around 50%(!) of the slave cpu with nothing other than Duality running on that machine.. Master buffer set to 256 with 4 buffers on all 5 VEP instances.

Is this normal? and how much lower cpu do you think I could get with fewer channels? does it make a huge difference?

I was planning on adding more ram to my new slave pc and expanding the template to include some more instruments, but now I'm kind of worried that the cpu will become a bottleneck Before i fill upp all that ram. In my experience with older kontakt libraries, ram has usually been more of a bottleneck even on a slave with a much weaker cpu, but now the opposite seems to be true?

I'm curios to hear how you set up your Duality Templates for those of you who also use VEP, what hardware are you running on and what's your average cpu-usage like?

I didn't notice any egregious CPU usage but I haven't had the chance to test it extensively. Larger Synchron libraries very commonly have streaming stutters or CPU spikes for me so I believe it. I HAVE to run elite strings and Synchron strings pro via VEP or my DAW will stutter during playback.
 

Nice to hear everything articulation by articulation! But I wish reverb was turned off by clicking on Reverb bus in the lower part than clicking on the Plugin itself in the upper part of Synchron player, because we still hear dry signal feeding the bus (some mics are feeding, some are not) and all of it is getting kind of messy)

How many mics are you using with SDS? In my experience don’t use more than 3 mics for Synchron libraries during composing and playing back.

I’m not a fan of using only room mix for composing and all other mics for rendering, when you need to change mix preset for all Synchron libraries.

I'm currently using 3 mics. A-Room, A-Mid and B-Dark,
I managed to reduce the cpu-usage quite significantly by deleting all unused articulations within each instance of Synchron, also noticed I mistakenly had some articulations loaded in multiple instances. After a bit of cleanup, I'm now down from 50% to 35% cpu-usage. I think that's acceptable running 65 channels with 3 mics, given how vast this library is! Maybe I'll try to go down to 2 mics just to add even more headroom for other instruments in my template.

I thought those articulations only take up RAM and not CPU. I usually remove the reverb from all instances.

But I’m pretty new with Syncron series. These damn Duality strings made me buy other sections too…and harp..and that one piano too…Blunther..god damn you VSL :)
 
A tip : Vintage mix + all sections patch + micro tonal pitch adjustments + portamento = wetting your pants in Cairo.
 
For fans of dimension strings, the Stage B Bright mics remind me a lot of the overall tone of dimension strings when all players are playing together. They’re more pointed and sharp, the Stage B Dark (obviously) more rounded. And of course you don’t have micro control over each desk/player.
 
Is there any way to change mic presets globally for entire instances?
This would be a huge time saver when comparing different Mic positions within a template.
No, in any case I don't know how this could be done sensibly with one keystroke...

Idea:
If you ever have a piece with a lot of instrument sections, you can let all instruments play with "Classic" and a few other presets. Then compare the overall mixes. You will quickly have a few favorites. From then on, you won't need the option you want any more.

I picked SDS up on Edu sale and so far only tested some Cellos articulations on Std Mixpresets comparing it to SSP Cellos - wow, it's very different sound - even when comparing just Tree mics SDS are much brighter than SSP - even though there are no EQs on SDS mics on most patches while in SSP the mics are mostly EQd on most mics making em brighter, but still not as bright as SDS in the end. So either the mics were very different or it was different post processing. The legatos are much nicer in SDS although SSP are no slouch either, different sound, SDS are more expressive and romantic while SSP are more "epic" in a way (and dynamic range is higher on SDS, big plus). I've also noticed that the shorts have completely different character in SDS - drier than SSP (I wonder why?, even comparing just tree mics) and less bow movement, more refined "classic" or folky in a way while SSP are again more "epic" - so it's nice to have both SDS and SSP because they are quite different in sound. I haven't really tested B-stage yet..! :) So it's quite interesting, can't wait to use SDS in action!))
 
My very superficial impression: Synchron Strings Pro are a new view on the classical strings, very different from the old VI Orchestral Strings. VIOS were very precise Wien Modern strings, SSP are more soft-nuanced neo-tonal strings.

Synchron Duality Strings are the modern cinema strings, more agile and energetic compared to the previous idea of "lush" and slow cinematic strings. More Hans Zimmer than Thomas Newman.
