Zebra Legacy: Oberheim emulation?

I don't think that's something special about the filter, you can do that with Zebra. However if you just want to have the specific patches on the OP-X you should get that.

Or.....get both, and recreate the OP-X patches in Zebra, and that way you'll know how to do it on just about any synth!

I am frequently stubborn in wanting to have X Y Z patch in Zebra or Diva, which probably slows me down when I could just get the real emulation and have it right away. But the amount of options that you have in something like Zebra AFTER you get the sound is what makes me want to spend the time and recreate them.

It's actually pretty good (CherryAudio). I'm finding the GeForce Oberhein SEM a nice surprise too, mono, but has potential for various uses and I can multiply the instances in my DAW.

Ah and Zebra with Ubie filters??? Wow. Wishlist for now, but some time this year I'm sure.

Good to see a few very worthy emulations, some very affordable, and decent ones. Will download demos later.

OK, so tonight I downloaded and tried these demos:

- CherryAudio - Eight-Voices
- DiscoDSP - OB-Xd2.11
- PluginAlliance - bx_Oberhausen
- GForce - Oberheim OB-E
- GForce - Oberheim SEM

CherryAudio and DiscoDSP didn't pull me in, I found them too superficial.

The bx_Oberhausen crashed my DAW after a minute or so with the demo.

In the end, to my ears the GForce emulations sound the most "alive." The others sound pale in comparison (personal preference).

The OB-E seems to have a lot more to offer, but I could never find how to hear the arps (sequencer), or see a pop-up menu for the presets.

I actually spent more time playing the SEM, despite being mono it has such a deeply satisfying and bold analog sound and it pulls me in and I love to hear it. It already has a place in a project I'm working on right now. :)

And maybe in a couple months maybe I'll be able to afford Zebra Legacy!

Any reason you didn't demo Synapse Audio's Obsession? It's the same price as Zebra legacy so I'd buy legacy to get ZebraHZ. Obsession is an OBXa emulation but is worth a demo anyway if you're just looking for that Oberheim sound.

For non-emulation, modern analog, Synapse's DUNE 3 is hard to beat. It is 8, three Osc synths in one with a choice of 31 filters, several of which are analog modeled. It also has three other synthesis methods when you're ready to expand from analog. A bit pricier than the other options but worth every penny in my opinion. Well worth a demo.

Ah yes, thanks! I did listen to the demos yesterday (tab still opened in my studio browser), but it didn't click for me. But upon your suggestion I just downloaded it and went through the patches, but it's still not clicking for me. Maybe some library presets would change my mind, but not today.

I was not looking for a pure emulation, but something close that could give me access to the kinds of pads like in the video I shared ▼.

And I listened to Syntronik's samples as well, but I find GForce SEM patches more "polished," and I'll keep the OB-E on the shortlist. As well as Zebra Legacy. :)

To be honest I'm not really a fan of Obsession either but since different people have different tastes I thought you might like it. A lot of people seem to like it but I'm not much of a fan of the old Oberheim synths so that no doubt influences my opinion.

I still recommend giving DUNE 3 a demo when you have the time. :emoji_thumbsup:

In your experience, how complex/straighforward is it to navigate and modify the presets?
 
I have OP-X Pro II, Zebra, bx oberhousen, OP-xa V... (don't get me started on SEMs) and I love OP-X Pro II. I love all of them but OP-X Pro II does seem to have a vibe. (sorry!)

I assume you're referring to DUNE 3. It can be as simple as a single layer with a single VA Osc or as complex as 8 layers with a total of 24 Oscs with mixed engines like VA, Wavetable, FM, and Single Sample import. Each layer has 3 Oscs, Osc 1 and 2 can be VA,FM or WT and Osc 3 can be VA or Sample import. Osc 1 and 2 have a well featured Unison engine and a great sounding spread. It has Dual Arps/Seqs and 2 FX Racks. Layers can be assigned to one or the other Arp or can bypass the Arps altogether and can be routed to one or both FX racks or bypass them both. Each layer can have its own filter out of a choice of 31 or two in Dual mode.

If you initialize a patch you're presented with a single layer with one VA Osc active so it's perfect for people new to synthesis but also has a tremendous amount of room to grow beyond that. I've been using it for years and have never gotten bored with it.

I find the workflow very simple but I have spent quite a lot of time with DUNE. There are a couple of simple concepts to grasp and after that it becomes super fast to program or modify presets.

It has a new Browser but also retains the old drop down menu which I prefer 90% of the time.

The thing I love the most about DUNE 3 is the very high quality core sound.

If you try the demo and have any questions I'll be happy to answer them and walk you through the workflow.

Props to @doctoremmet for posting a J3P0 clip – he's a buddy of mine and one of my favorite musicians on earth! I highly encourage everyone to check out his record and his work with Marcus Miller etc. Fantastic pianist/keyboardist, sound designer, composer, arranger, the works.

When he released a patch set for Disco DSP's "OBXD" plugin early in the pandemic, I went ahead and made a track with nothing but that free (at the time) soft synth. These days I'm pretty all about Arturia's Oberheim plugin, which is really fantastic, but Disco DSP's take on it is pretty excellent, I have to say. Here's the track, for anyone interested.
