What's new

OT : Andea Sample Library by Richard Harvey

Looking at the Ronroco in the SINE walkthrough, there may not have been any such updates. It could possibly be kinda good, kinda bad?
  • Good: consistency across other OT SINE products. I don't have to go sniffing for a function, because everything behaves the same way.
  • (Potentially) Bad: everything behaves the same way.
Also, once you get comfortable with it, the PolyMap stuff in SINE can be fantastic. It'd be a shame if other sweeping changes meant that wasn't feasible for a given product.

It took Spitfire Audio a while to get to that point of per-product customization on their own player (with Charlie Clouser's guidance on Hammers), so obviously we may see that evolution some day.
Spitfire did it before Hammers actually - for example, Symphonic Motions has a ton of custom stuff under the hood.

OT unfortunately has generally not done anything new or interesting to the player functionality for new releases (like Tallin or JXL Perc or this now). Polymaps are cool in concept but a nightmare from a usability standpoint due to SINE’s UI…deficiencies.

The other criticism of Phoenix was limited dynamic layers and round robins - I wonder if that’s the case here as well? When you are sampling, either you do a lot of instruments with shallow depth or fewer instruments more deeply. I imagine OT leans towards the former, similar to Phoenix.

The plucked instruments in Phoenix Orchestra, the previous OT-Richard Harvey collab, were executed in a questionable way. Like, no RRs at all questionable (except Yangqin).

Better to stay away and let early adopters test, then pick up a few individual instruments that turned out to be good. That's what I would have done with Phoenix.

@Evans,

You are free to voice your opinion, but what bothers me is your rush to criticize, or be negative, without actually testing the library, or maybe even owning the library, why not appreciate, and be postitive, about this new library ? Why do you have to rush smudging negativity to a brand new library release by OT. Sorry, I didn't appreciate your post.
To play devil's advocate, you have rushed to praise without testing out the library. Each of you is as well positioned -- or poorly positioned, depending on one's perspective -- to comment on the library. The only thing that differs is that your sentiment is positive whereas his sentiment is not. Can we please do away with trying to silence people with dissenting opinions on a library? It's called Sample Talk. Not Sample Positive Talk.

On a separate note, it's for libraries like this where I'm really digging OT's a la carte approach. I don't think I can justify spending the full price on the lib because even though the intro price seems reasonable for someone that will use the lion's share of the stuff in here, I know that there is much I wouldn't use often. BUT, I'm thinking it would be nice to grab one or two of the plucked instruments ... and perhaps one or two of the winds. So I can spend around 100 bucks and get 3-4 cool new instruments for ethnic compositions. I'm a big fan.

Has anyone bought any of the instruments yet? I'm highly tempted to get the Ronroco a la carte but not sure if I should wait until others have tried it out...

bad way - there were no RRs for most if not all of the plucked instruments. Like the 90s
Oh wow. That's surprising. And also concerning, since I think this library is part of the same "line" of libraries ... so I wouldn't be surprised if they went with the same approach.

Are you referring to this lib or Phoenix?
This one. I didn't grab anything yet but according to them some of the instruments have anywhere from 4 (chords articulation) to 6 or 8RR.

They did note a few horrible noise issues in some of them, so that might make that number drop a little in terms of "usable" RR

Ok thank you. By the way, who is "they"? :P

Nyx in the VI-C discord. (There's still some discussion on the lib going on in there right now actually with some audio examples so you can probably head on there for more info)
Oh thanks, I didn't even realize that existed to be honest. It seems like the feedback there so far has been ... less than stellar.

I'm not the positive post police, or trying to be judgmental to what forum members post. I'm just surprised how fast negativity seems to win over the positive aspects of any library, seems to be the new trend on the forum these days.
