What's new

Dune (the synth) is pretty awesome.

Thoughts on Dune vs Zebra?
Both are great synths, however I find Zebra 2's sound and feature set a bit outdated in 2023.

But once again the only advice that matters is to try the demo of both and find out which one (or both or neither) you like.

They both have their strengths and weaknesses so it just comes down to personal preference as to sound. Workflow can be learned so sound should be the number one determining factor and no one can tell you what sounds you like and need.

Oh and I forgot to mention while you're demoing synths try Rob Papen's BLUE 3. It's "only" got 6 Oscs but it's is a very deep synth capable of some wonderful sounds. Think Ensoniq, PPG, D-50 type sounds.

I would choose it over Zebra 2 every day of the week and twice on Sunday........

Well, the way Zebra's sound blends organically with orchestral colors isn't something that will be "outdated" soon.
(It was the reason why I bought Zebra 2 when it was released [and u-he still a small 1 man company], and it is the reason why lots of composers still embrace it).
But sure, if you're coming form a different angle (like EDM etc), your perception may vary.

Bulent kept tacking on new features to SM2 and now SM3 but tends not to focus on stability which is why I almost never use SM2 these days. It's one of the most unstable plugins I own.
Synthmaster 3 is coming at the end of the year. Maybe there's some fixes for stability issues.

Any outstanding "must have" presets/patches/soundsets for it ? So far I only got the Dune Nights which is really great for a free soundset but I am sure there must be more out there not to be missed.

So far I am (apart from the sound) really caught from the genetic feature which really seems to be a "morph" between patches and gives great results so far even for some crazy ideas, so additional patches not really needed, but.....:whistling:
Care to share where you got the "Dune Nights" free soundset? I tried googling and not coming up with anything. Thanks.

Thanks for the heads up on Dune 3.

I read the posts
I repeat "I do NOT need another synth" over & over
Take my dog for a walk
Remind myself I do NOT need another synth
Head over to JRR
Use code Group

Will be spending the rest of the night in my Synth zone with Dune 3 :)
(Hope my puppy understands)

I rarely say something like this but at this price just go ahead and buy it. 👍
Yeah after watching some demos, tutorials, demoing it myself... the workflow is a little difficult to get into for now but WOW that sound :emoji_sweat_smile:
That being said, anyone have any nice skins for Dune?

If you think you'll ever want Dune 3, now is the time to buy it. I've kept an eye on the price for a few years and it's never gotten anywhere near this, unless I missed a flash sale.

To me the sound reminds me of Pigments 3 / 4. That nice crystal clear, pristine glassy artificial sound which is great for some things e.g. EDM type stuff.

The price is very tempting. But I just don't see myself enjoying working through Dune when I'm after a different type of sound. Zebra 2 (and upcoming almost free Zebra 3) should have me covered for everything I'm wanting to do. Not to mention I have Omnisphere. F*k I really want to buy this. Does Synapse allow resale?

Dune Nights are my patches i made over the last year or two! Glad to see some of you guys downloading them.. Hope you get some use out of it. Admittedly I haven't done much to promote the preset pack as i have just been buried with a 3 year old and life lol.

Anyways, for those on the fence, I'd highly recommend Dune, especially at the sale price. Once you get the work flow (which i found easy) the 8 layer system gives you so much control. The built in FX are fantastic as well.

I know this is a Dune thread, but I built some presets in the same vain as Dune Nights for Rapid if anyone is interested (saw some of you guys chatting about it). Link below. Rapid reminds me of Dune a lot with its layer system. It just takes it a bit further than Dune in what it can do. That said though, nothing can beat Dune for that sound. Rapid and Thorn, my other personal fav, fall just behind it.
