What's new

Dune (the synth) is pretty awesome.

Fors Opal, the other Opal is pretty cool as well. If you use Ableton check it out :)

UAD Opal, I was impressed when I demo'd it. It's sweet sounding and easy to use like @vitocorleone123 mentions. For many here I think it'd be just ticket.

I bought Hive 2 and Dune 3 both recently. Both are badass. I think if I could have only one it'd be Hive 2 but Dune 3's "genetics" feature is a preset tweakers wet dream. It lets you take two or three presets and create a new random-ish patch based on them. I'm not sure why this isn't featured more prominently in it's feature list.

I ranked the saw sound as 1) Spire, 2) Hive 2) and 2.5) Dune 3. Every other analog osc shape I preferred H2 and D3 vs Spire. But that was my ears - though I did spend hours comparing oscillators and then filters. This was long before Vital existed so that wasn’t compared.

And, yes, UAD Opal is a synth. I wasn’t aware that some other company named their product the same. I’ve relegated H2 to my “Less Used” sub folder of synths since Opal was purchased. I don’t go deep on sound design, so the core oscillator and filter sounds are critical to me. Anyway, this is OT as it’s supposed to be about D3.

I’ll just say again: if you don’t already have Hive 2, demo Dune 3. If you do have Hive 2, you should know there’s a fair bit of overlap and decide which sounds better to you and which features you require.
Ah, I see... if you had put UAD and not just Opal, then I wouldn't have questioned that, apologies if the message came off as impolite, it was more of an emphasised expression of being surprised at the comparison.

All I can say is try the DUNE 3 demo yourself. Don't let anyone's opinion sway you one way or the other.

DUNE 3 is my favorite synth of all time and that includes all the hardware synths I've owned or played over the past five decades.

It has a high quality sound that I prefer over any other which is of course my opinion.

But I can share some facts. DUNE 3 is:

8 synths in one with a total of 24 Oscillators.

VA, FM, Wavetable, and Single Sample Import (which is far more useful than one would imagine).

31 Filter types of which 5 are Analog Modeled after hardware units. (and Dual Filters per layer)

2 FX racks with high quality effects units and drag/reorder

2 Arp/Seqs with Midi File import.

Wavetable creator with .wav import and export.

4 MSEGs and 3 LFOs.

Extensive Unison options.

Is very easy to program once you grasp a couple of simple concepts and so on.

But even though I love DUNE 3, I still say try the demo because we all have different tastes, make different music, and have different skill levels.

I will say that if you call yourself a synthesizer enthusiast then you owe it to yourself to try the demo and the current sales price is as no-brainer as you'll find in this business. I've never seen it this low so take advantage now.

If anyone has questions on DUNE 3's operation I can probably help as I've created hundreds and hundreds of patches for it going back to the very first version.

This is exactly why I bought Dune 3.

When does the Dune 3 sale end? Also a bit intrepid that the Zimmer synth may come out soon...

I don't know when the sale ends but I wouldn't make any decisions based on the HZ synth as once again I see no evidence that it's going to be released any time soon.

It's possible that it may be under development away from the usual Synapse forums but again I see no evidence of that (we don't even know exaclty what the project is other than it is Hans' concept and coded by Synapse).

At any rate you may not see a price this low for DUNE 3 again or at least for quite a while. I don't think I've ever seen it this low before.

I've been ruminating on this point a lot recently.
I tend to go in long cycles. At the moment, I'm generally working with my few hardware synths and only a couple of software synths (all the other software synths have been deleted or moved to a subfolder out of sight) - synths like Twin3 and UAD Opal and PolyMax.

I've no doubt that Dune 3, for some, could also fit the bill (literally, as well, given the nice price).

On KVR, I remember suggesting that the Genetics feature should be part of the front screen so you could at least have a short-list browser in which to combine different patches from the front of the GUI whilst having the back end free for a larger overview. In my current Hive 2 GUI redesign project, a front-end browser is something I've implemented among many other features.

Only a couple of days left. Try that demo......
Any outstanding "must have" presets/patches/soundsets for it ? So far I only got the Dune Nights which is really great for a free soundset but I am sure there must be more out there not to be missed.

So far I am (apart from the sound) really caught from the genetic feature which really seems to be a "morph" between patches and gives great results so far even for some crazy ideas, so additional patches not really needed, but.....:whistling:

Ah shoot, here I was thinking, eh, I probably don't need this, and here Teksonik comes along and gives it the highest praise... I'll have to reconsider perhaps 😂

As mentioned above Kevin Shroeder is a top notch sound designer. Anything from Ed Ten Eyck is highly recommended as well.

Don't take my word for it, please try the demo. It's not like I'm getting a commission or anything it's just that DUNE has given me countless wonderful hours of joy over the years so if someone else finds they love it as much as I do then I feel like I've done a service.
