What's new

OT : Andea Sample Library by Richard Harvey

At first I though "Oh, good, another one I don't need".
Then I watched the video and changed my mind within seconds.
However, I can't afford it right now, so luckily I don't have to make a decision :)

Oh wow they've been teasing this for a while and dropped another one yesterday. Didn't expect it to come out immediately after! Looks great

Is this the Richard Harvey Toolkit library I always wanted them to do? Just saw this and didn't watch a walkthrough or listened to any demo yet.

I hope this doesn't end up like Phoenix in that a lot of the recordings simply don't sound pristine enough compared to competitive options.

For example, listen to this Ronroco compared to the one from Loot Audio. I prefer the latter's brightness and clarity.
It will be nice to hear some positive comments, instead of insta-criticism of a new library.

Bold move to squash other users' opinions in a Sample Talk thread. Heck, I even pick up most OT releases and have defended/promoted MODUS to others, despite other people picking on it.

It's not like I'm calling it a "ripoff" as seen in the Stack thread, and this isn't like the people who used to raid every VSL thread (no matter the topic) to gripe about eLicenser, or like the volume of complaints in the paid Commercials thread for Berlin Main on SINE.

Now, let's get back to talking about the product, positive, neutral, or negative.

(EDIT) I'm not going to clutter this up with another post, so here's my clarification in response to the below and then I'm peaced out on further responses on that line of thought:
  • I heard a concern in the very first audio example on the Instruments page, which reminded me of another OT library that I have and otherwise like (despite the limited RRs).
  • I related that to a competitive offer (that I've seen very respected users here recommend), giving people a chance to use their own ears with a smaller dev in mind.
  • If that's not appropriate for Sample Talk, then Sample Talk isn't a safe place for people to make informed purchase decisions. This isn't a fan club.

On the positive side, the prices appear to be pretty darn competitive. I've seen that (per-instrument pricing, particularly) be a criticism in the past, but some of these are surprisingly... low?

@Evans,

You are free to voice your opinion, but what bothers me is your rush to criticize, or be negative, without actually testing the library, or maybe even owning the library, why not appreciate, and be postitive, about this new library ? Why do you have to rush smudging negativity to a brand new library release by OT. Sorry, I didn't appreciate your post.

It'll be interesting to see if OT updated SINE in anyway to make playing things like guitar or flutes easier, like what you see in dedicated libraries / custom Kontakt engines (ex. Charango from 8Dio has a strum engine and the solo engine adds things automatically like finger / fret noises, vibrato control, etc. Historically, there's very little custom scripting / workflow UI added to SINE for specific instruments - choir in Tallin as an example).

Side note: one thing I like about these Harvey collabs are the videos of him sharing background information on the instruments. He's gold.

Looking at the Ronroco in the SINE walkthrough, there may not have been any such updates. It could possibly be kinda good, kinda bad?
  • Good: consistency across other OT SINE products. I don't have to go sniffing for a function, because everything behaves the same way.
  • (Potentially) Bad: everything behaves the same way.
Also, once you get comfortable with it, the PolyMap stuff in SINE can be fantastic. It'd be a shame if other sweeping changes meant that wasn't feasible for a given product.

It took Spitfire Audio a while to get to that point of per-product customization on their own player (with Charlie Clouser's guidance on Hammers), so obviously we may see that evolution some day.

I'd love to see more specialized features per instrument in SINE but I doubt it's coming. SINE Has a multitude of other issues that people want addressed first, and also the fact that SINE still uses round robins for choir syllables seems to suggest that custom features per instrument type probably isn't too high a priority. OT doesn't have many "strumming" instruments compared to choirs, so if they didn't do one for the choir I doubt one for other instruments is coming.

Hopefully in the future though.

This could be a perfect companion to TSS. With strings, winds, plucked, and percussion, you’re incredibly well equipped for at least 75% of that jrpg sound. At least until the rest of the Tokyo series comes out! Interesting!
