Who are these strange new ASCAP Publishers?

I got a bunch of new tracks with "KARGA_CUE" in the title registered by publishers BUDGIE SMUGGLER and SUM OF MUSIC.

In the ASCAP repertory, BUDGIE SMUGGLER has 30183 registrations and SUM OF MUSIC has 130442 registrations.

I don't feel good about this!

I'm not an expert on ASCAP, but there has been a similar thing happening on PRS when a track has no Publisher attached. In this case they are registering themselves as Publisher in order to get payments. You should certainly talk to ASCAP about this.

I found out what is happening. One publisher is the music library and the other publisher is a production company. So the music library is splitting a portion of their publishing with the production company to secure placements.

More than likely, this is a gratis blanket deal and the composers will not receive any sync fee or license fee payments. The composers will only receive backend writer share royalties.

That is kind of sad.

Same thing happened to me in my ASCAP cue list. I looked up the name- its Karga Seven Pictures. They do some shows for the Discovery Channel. I thought all that re-titling would lead to more placements for me but so far nothing. As a matter of fact, I think one or more of my cues got lost in the shuffle when they did this.
