What's new

Thoughts?

I am not devaluing the music you like to non-music, or judging your taste, please don't misunderstand.
One of my favourite albums is Thursday Afternoon by Brian Eno.
I don't need structured and rule-following and understandable and "hummable" music to enjoy it.

I was not defining "music". For Cage even silence could be music.
I was defining timeless and culturally relevant music for ages to come.
Like timeless art in general. Leonardo, Picasso, Dalì, Magritte.....

Even a men's lavatory can be a form of art if an artist comes up with an idea for the first time (Duchamp).

But to put on the same stage really good sound design with Beethoven and the Beatles is still delusional at best in my opinion.
Defining art in terms of qualities inherent in works or forms is doomed to failure. More usefully art can be thought of as a relation that gives rise to a feeling " the art buzz" Such a definitiom allows for " in matters of taste there can be be no disagreement" as well as variations in the extension over time and space of where those relations occur and the specifics of their nature. eg Mozart popularity compared to Ikeda
