What's new

This arrangement and harmony are beautiful. Analyzing Josh Groban's 'She'!

Chris, good video, but people who don’t know better — and judging by the way you talk about the song, you appear to belong to them — might be thinking that "She" was written by Josh Groban when it was, of course, written almost fifty years ago by Charles Aznavour (music) and Herbert Kretzmer (lyrics).

The original arrangement (which has proven an inspiration for the ones that are used in most cover versions) was by Del Newman, orchestrator/arranger extraordinaire and a legendary name in British popular music (and a student of Antal Dorati!)

“She” was first released in 1974 and was a pretty solid European hit for Aznavour (not as big as his “The Old Fashioned Way” however). The song was most famously covered in 1999 by Elvis Costello and got a lot of exposure thanks to its use in the successful movie “Notting Hill”.
Jeff Lynne (of ELO) did a cover as well for his second solo album.

Hi there, thank you for the info! I definitely wasn't aware of this, so it's great to know. I've edited my original post :) Cheers!

Really nice - thanks

Where the song ends, he could have revealed a glimpse of her dark side with a dissonance chord in minor, would have been awesome. :2thumbs: Notice the lyrics "She may not be what she may seem."
