So what's the difference between recent posts and latest posts?

Put another way.
If you just looked at a thread, even if it is the most recently posted to thread on the site (top of the list), and you are in Latest Posts, then you will not see that thread that you just looked at in it's place at the top of the list.
However, in the same scenario, if you just looked at a that same thread (it's the newest) and you click on Recent Posts, you will still see that thread at it's place at the top of the list, it will just not be in a bold font as are the other threads are that you have not yet viewed. And I believe the page icon to the left of the thread title will be missing from those threads that you have viewed when in the Recent Post view.
