Query regarding this string attack sound

Not sure if I should put this topic here or somewhere else. :S

I must ask though: how is this sharp string attack at the beginning of this song done:

After the oboe melody, the strings, along with guitar start playing another melody with a sharp string attack and then smooth legato after. Is that a staccato layered or just a sharp bow attack?

On a related note, are those real orchestra instruments or samples? The legato on the strings seems very smooth, but the strings, oboe and french horns all have a very 'rompler' quality to them, imo.

Maybe I just need to listen to ALOT more real orchestral instruments :P
Cheers!

Those are very easily fake.

And to get that kind of sound in samples, what you might look for in libraries is an articulation called "marcato". For example, Cinematic Studio Strings lets you select marcato, and then still play passages with legato (it will do legato scripting on all notes beyond the first, which has the sharpest attack).

In other libraries, like Spitfire string libraries, the marcato is automatically included when you play sustain with a high velocity.
