Project Notes

How do you keep your project notes in your DAW on a project and session basis?
How do you keep your production notes and lessons learned in general?

For example:
Ableton Live has the info panel, which is pretty limited but there's also M4L plugins like
https://elphnt.co.za/live-packs/ntpd which has a little more flexibility.

Reaper has text notes, or you could use a VST plugin like https://teragonaudio.com/ExtraNotes.html

I use OneNote and have a ton of notes but wondering how other people handle this as it's a key part of my workflow.

What DAWs, tools, and processes do you use to do this efficiently?

Like you OneNote is my go to place to keep info on everything I do. I love the organization scheme and the simplicity of it. However I have to say that I have stuck to the last build using the top tab organization (Version 15.33 build 170409). After that OneNote switched to that current trend of organizing things from the left with left panes over left panes, such a waste of space on a laptop screen.

When in the middle of a project, since I use Logic, I use the track note tool to tell me where I was and things I had in mind.

In case you are curious about what I track in OneNote, here:
- todos and hard prioritization of things to do (I don't do music full time, so time is of the essence for me)
- critical listening and self listening assignment
- notes on studying virtual instrument and effects
- notes DAW workflows
- notes on production workflows
- notes/ideas on compositions and projects
- notes on tech (like MIDI obscure behaviors or PC details)
- notes on studio setup (those wires don't move but I forget where things go)
- notes on system upgrades and instruments/upgrades (I do keep an open "IT" day during the week to do all my upgrade (OS, plugins, hardware etc). That way if something odd happens after that I always refer to this captain's log.
- also recently I started to put a list together of things I want to buy... so when I have the impulse to buy something, I check that note first. It might remind me of a larger purchase I wanted to do or tell me I prioritized something else ahead.

The other big thing for me is inventory of my instruments... I use a tool called Zotero for that.
Not made specifically for it, but works well ("books" are my instrument and sample libraries, and I use tags/labels for instruments).

Can you tell am an organizer?

I know what you mean about the OneNote interface, though I'm on the latest *last* desktop version atm so gotten used to the vertical tabs now. I have not converted my GB's of notes to the cloud as yet though - that's for another day.
You might want to look into that, as the desktop version will be dropped eventually -

Thanks for the insight into your workflow. I think this is an important area, but it's very messy at the moment trying to manage it.
