Looking for advice on CPU for a master PC

I have a late 2013 iMac with a not so great processor so I’ve decided to get me a PC this time.

I’m running the libraries from a slave PC so I need one with a processor capacity to play quite a lot of midi tracks and to do the final mixing. I’m doing orchestral music.

Am I right that the RAM is not what’s most important here? My iMac today has 24gb RAM and it has never been a problem but the quad-core processor struggles quickly.

So maybe I can put the money on the CPU and don’t go above 32gb of RAM?

SSD discs are a must of course.

So what CPU should I get when it’s for processing the midi and effect plugins, and not streaming the libraries? Is 8-core enough and how important is the speed? Am I right that single core speed is more important than number of cores?

I found one with the i7-8770k for $1400. It’s one of the fastest single thread CPUs.

How many tracks does your iMac start struggling with? Just troubleshooting before adding my 2 pence. :)

I would say both speed and number of cores matter. Check this out:

edit: I couldn't find anything on 8770k. I doubt it exists. Do you have any links?

Also, even though you use your slave for sample streaming, you still have high track count, and it all depends how your daw is utilizing the cores. If it uses all the cores well, you are really benefiting from high core count as well, as you can see in these benchmark results.

I have 7820x in my master and I think I will replace it with 7940x asap as my Cubase asio performance meter is topping constantly.
