It's tough to say... he uses the Juno-60 mostly for pads. The sequenced riff could be Korg MS-20, Korg PS-3100, or Bass Station II. But could be the 60 too. Frahm uses 60's for these types of riffs a lot.

If you can afford it, get an analogue hardware synth. The difference in sound quality is night and day. I used to think DIVA sounded pretty good until I A/B'd with a hardware synth. Aint nothin like the real thang, bay-bee....

Pianoteq is very playable and fun to play. Usually when I start playing Pianoteq I don't want to stop. However, when A/B'd against a good sample library, Pianoteq doesn't sound real. Sample libraries on the other hand, sound great but are prone to things like stuck notes, weird pedaling errors...

I've been using VEP and Spectrasonics for years with no problems and nothing special required to set it up. I must ask though, why are you returning to AUX channels in DP and not midi tracks? I'm guessing there's something strange about the way you're routing the audio.

About 6TB for me. Speaking of which, I'm hosting my libs on internal drives on 2 pre-2012 Mac Pros. This year I'm considering a move to the new Mac Pro (if it's ever released) which would require moving all my libs to external drives. I get a headache just thinking about it.

Well unless it's really bad video editing, there are several moments during the concert where he's playing the "midi controller" and the notes don't match up with the piano lines being heard.

One thing that always bothered me about that concert is that Hans is faking playing the piano throughout the entire concert. He's playing a synth keyboard embedded into a wooden piano frame to make it appear like he's playing piano. In reality, he's just playing simple chords and triggering...

From my experience, SoundCloud plateaued about 4 years ago. Unless you're a well-known artists, you shouldn't expect to get a lot of views.

I just purchased and installed Auras and all I can say is Wow! So inspiring that I wrote a new track within the first 10 minutes of playing it on my ROLI. That's always a sign of a great VI. Awesome job guys... I look forward to hopefully more of your products in the future.

Yes... I think there's a memory bug with NOVO. It always causes spikes in CPU load... sometimes I get error messages. I hope they're working on a fix.

I posted something a few weeks ago asking if anyone was using the ROLI for solo strings and other instruments. Surprisingly no one is. I'm guessing cost and learning curve are why this is not popular choice for composers.

It really shines with a higher-end weighted keyboard. When I first got it I was still using a synth action board, and wasn't impressed with the piano. But then I got a Roland A-88 and it really comes alive!

I just saw this demo, and was blown away: He made the Blakus (which in my opinion is pretty mediocre) sound amazing using a ROLI 25. Im wondering how hard it would be to set up the ROLI to respond to string and guitar VIs like this?

I found the Olafur Evo to be pretty limiting. It sounds awesome, but sort of a one-trick pony. Intimate Strings looks to be way more versatile, plus you have the ARPs which makes it a no brainer.

The IS pianos sound great, but are not playable. They pass for doing slow ballads or tracks with minimal notes, but break down on anything busier than that.

I'm wondering about all the people saying Pianoteq.... are you piano players? Reminds of when non-guitar players think guitar VIs sound like real guitars. You can strike one note and think "yep, that sounds like a guitar". But good luck trying to make it sound realistic beyond that.

The synth lead notes during the intro are too short. The track would be a lot better if those notes had a longer decay, giving them more rhythm. It almost sounds like they're out of sync because they decay too quickly.

My experience with Superior is that it actually sounds "inferior" to EZ, so don't be fooled by the name. It's old.... outdated interface and not user friendly. That was my experience.

The desk would be a lot more attractive in an overly-produced video with a team of Millennial hipsters doing something cool on or around the desk.

Exactly. The 8Dio pianos become especially glaringly awful when you A/B them with other pianos.

Sorry to add a dose of reality here, but all of 8Dio pianos are crap (if you're a piano player who knows what a piano is supposed to sound like).

I disagree about the felt piano. The mid to upper keys sound ok, but the lower octaves suck. The synth sounds are *meh* , very muted with no dynamics, which is what you can expect from sampled synths.

it's an industry convention mostly for people who work in film, television and video production. There are some libraries there, but overall the music presence at this show is a small foot print.

I was recently looking at Spitfire Sacconi Quartet as a possible solo string library. I know it's marketed for quartet writing, but it sounds like it might be good for solo strings as well, especially with the vast amount of articulations. Anyone say Yay or Nay?

It seems best suited for darkscore/horror type of music, which for me is a little disappointing since I'm not into those genres.

Why is that... because pedal uses too much CPU or because of a flaw in the programing?

The Fender model is "ok"... doesn't sound that great, and doesn't hold a candle to Strawberry. If you want to try Amplesound, the Telecaster and Gibson models are much better IMO.

Yeah I'd be willing to sacrifice a mod wheel for a good quality keyboard and great feel. I just looked up the NI S88 and it's actually a Fatar keyboard which are infamous for quality control issues. So I think Roland probably wins out as a trusted brand with higher quality parts.

Agreed. I think this will be the big difference. I noticed the notes and chords glued together nicely in a lot of those demos. I didn't cringe like when I first heard the Spitfire HZ piano demos.

In the market for a new midi keyboard controller... I've heard Roland makes pretty quality keyboards with good feel, but I've never been a fan of the mod lever that snaps back, as opposed to a mod wheel you can leave in any position. Has anyone found this to be a big limitation with using VIs?

I disagree about the guitar library. I own just about every guitar library out there and am still dissatisfied with all of them. Some have great play-ability but poor articulations, some have great articulations but poor play-ability. I think what would be exciting from a Spectrasonics...

I really wish Lynda.com would add a DP training to their site... they have training for almost all of the other popular DAWs. But I'm guessing the user base for DP is still too small for them to justify? Shame.

Timely thread... just yesterday I cross-graded from EZ to Superior.I have say at first I was pretty disappointed with Superior out-of-the box. It only comes with 1 kit and the presets are just awful. But as mc_dell said, the real power comes from the expansion libraries and producer presets...

I just purchased NI Rick Bass and it sounds awesome but it's absolutely killing me that they have the sustain pedal assigned to a slide articulation, rather than... you know, a sustain!? Even worse, there appears to be no way to re-assign the midi CCs so the sustain pedal triggers the sustain...

Sluggo.... it doesn't exist. Your best bet would be to get a Telecaster library and Guitar Rig 5. But there aren't any guitar libraries that even come close to mimicking the articulations needed for Post Rock.
