New Mac Pro and New M2 Ultra Mac Studio!!! (Yeah!)

Agreed that OWC is pretty hit-or-miss in my experience. I will probably pick up an OWC Envoy Express, though, as there doesn't seem to be anything better on the market right now with similar performance/protocol/form factor for the price.

    NotePerformer 4 Expectations or Wishes

I'm sorry to say that I'm too lazy and time-constrained to read all 104 pages of what is no doubt an excellent thread! So... Is there a general consensus on which libraries work best with NotePerformer 4 and Dorico? I just need a full orchestra that doesn't sound like general MIDI, preferably...

    For Sale Mac Pro 2019 (7,1) 16-core 192 GB 4 TB

Hello VI Control: I’m selling my 2019 16-core Mac Pro with 192 GB of RAM, 4 TB of storage, and 8 GB Radeon Pro 580X. The tower is in excellent condition and I still have the original (huge!) box. Asking price is $3,500, but offers are welcome. I’d prefer a face-to-face transaction, but won’t...

Hi Eloy: You mention in the video having migrated “from a 2019 16-core.” I assume you are referring to a 2019 Mac Pro tower? I’m considering making the same migration. Thanks!

VSL Mystery release??? (UPDATE: Synchron Duality Strings)

I went into the weekend thinking I was going to try out the Duality Strings demo, but after downloading ~260 GB of samples, all attempts to install the ~100 MB Synchron Player cause Vienna Assistant to crash. Has anyone else run into this? Mac Pro 7,1 w/ macOS Ventura

Pacific Strings - user demo thread

Sure thing. Also, MSS had legato lookahead enabled. Someone more experienced with the library than me will have to weigh in on whether better transitions can be obtained with lookahead disabled. I won’t be able to experiment more before tomorrow.
  11. S

Pacific Strings - user demo thread

Wow. Tell us how you really feel. 😄 The settings are all “auto” to ensure the sound is as out-of-the-box as possible. Among other things, that means MSS is choosing the transition speed and transition volume. “Molto” vibrato is also enabled because that’s default, which might be making things...

    Audiobro Modern Scoring Strings

I can’t really agree, but I spent many years with VSL libraries that took far more effort and tweaking to make them sound somewhat convincing. MSS seems pretty easy in comparison.

Pacific Strings - user demo thread

I bought Pacific yesterday, so this is my last pass with Modern Scoring Strings before I go play with Jasper's latest release. I was getting tired of MSS's default, built-in EQ and Reverb, so I turned them off and threw on some light EQ and Cinematic Rooms. I think I got the rebows figured out...

Pacific Strings - user demo thread

Maybe it's the legato transition speed. I left it on "Auto".

Pacific Strings - user demo thread

Feedback is welcome! I think you own this library? I generally wouldn't post a mock-up of a library I've owned for less than two days, but there wasn't one already here for MSS. I'm still not happy with the same-note rebows, but probably need to dive into the manual to see what I'm doing wrong.
  17. S

Pacific Strings - user demo thread

I've updated the MSS example again, this time making use of Modern Scoring String's bloom legato, and selective use of portamento. This isn't how I'd EQ it if I had my way, but I wanted to faithfully represent the out-of-the-box sound.
  18. S

Pacific Strings - user demo thread

Thanks Dan. I've updated the file in the original post by pushing everything down an octave, but here it is again. I may take another, more comprehensive pass later today as I get more familiar with MSS. EDIT: I've updated it again, this time making use of Modern Scoring String's bloom legato...

Mac Studio (New Hardware Mac Computer)!!!!

Well, they aren't giving up much. According to The Verge, the M1 Ultra has comparable multi-core performance to their 32-core Threadripper. Yes, I'm aware 64-core Epyc CPUs exist (I use Epyc servers on a daily basis), but that kind of power consumption and noise don't belong in a desktop system.

Mac Studio (New Hardware Mac Computer)!!!!

I agree with all of this. I have about 15 TB of SSD storage in my 2019 Mac Pro, including the boot drive. The boot drive doesn't store any sample data. It gets cloned regularly to another SSD via CCC. The SSD volumes containing samples are periodically backed up to a NAS device via CCC...

    Staffpad on older iPads...

I have the current-generation iPad Pro M1 12.9" with 16 GB of RAM and StaffPad occasionally crashes here, too, so I don't think it's a hardware issue. Keep in mind that a 2019 iPad Pro 12.9" gets you 6 GB of RAM, which is three time as much as a first-generation iPad Pro 11".

  52. S

IPad Pro 11" vs 12.9" ... and getting warm with StaffPad?

Maybe a strange question, but: How often do you compose on the couch, supporting the iPad with only your hand? I've got a 12.9" on order, but I'm afraid it's going to be too big. Everyone talks about the 12.9" iPad being great on a desk, but I'm trying to get away from my desk.
