    Slate + Ash or Bitwig

I switched from Ableton/Logic to using Bitwig as my primary. It is so flexible and its modular. Great for sound design. I like Landforms, for example, but I personally could get the same results by running any orchestral library through something like Infiltrator and get close. Bitwig is an...

    A sort of Epic March

It would be great if I could get a few comments on the mixes. The epic pieces I'm posting are not meant to be musical masterpieces. lol These are mostly for fun and experimentation. I do appreciate all of the comments though.

    A sort of Epic March

Thank you Jamieboo! I personally don't care for "pop" music structure and always try to insert some creativity into my music. Any reference to Frank Zappa is awesome. He was a real genius, I think.

    A sort of Epic March

I thank you for your input Polkasound. We all know music is highly subjective. I grew up on Stravinsky and Miles Davis, so maybe to me, it isn't all that discombobulated. I really do appreciate your point of view though. Ambient music is really my thing, but I am venturing out in to new...

    Epic Trailer.....not another one...

I think the horns are pretty good. My only comment is I would like to hear more transparency in the reverb. I am having this difficulty also. What horns are you using? Very nice piece!

Yes Polkasound, I've never had a shortage of ideas, but sometimes they may come across as jumbled. I will keep working and posting new pieces. thanks . . .

    A sort of Epic March

Thank you for your comments! I think it should be condensed. I compose spontaneously, meaning I improvise most of the time. Sometimes this gets lost in the arranging. I will give this more work.
  26. fritzmartinbass

    A sort of Epic March

Thanks for the kind words. I definitely should add more space with some reverb. I've just been on this anti over saturated reverb kick as of late. I'm having trouble finding a really transparent reverb.

Who out here has experience with Mellotrons ?

I'm on a Mac using the AU. But, I can say it is way more flexible than Mellotoon. You can mix and match patches, for example.

Do Most Of You Read Music?

Do most of you read music? As a theory teacher, I deal with this question all the time. Do you have to read to make good music? - I don't think so. Does it speed things up? - Sometimes Will it make you a better composer? - I think this is subjective. Does reading help your communication...

Yeah, I think the piece I really like by Adams is called Harmonium. Had to transcribe part of it in school one semester.
  69. fritzmartinbass

    Gustav Holst

I believe he was referring to Indian Ragas, which opens up a whole different way of thinking tonally. And he was referring to John Adams, a wonderful American minimalist.
  70. fritzmartinbass

    Gustav Holst

I sure wish I was that overrated! One thing I can say is that in my mind, the Planets is a true masterpiece. As far as "borrowing" is concerned, in Western music, the 12 notes become finite at some point.
  71. fritzmartinbass

    Gustav Holst

It tells me that Holst was TRUE greatness. And, the Stravinsky quote was kind of a joke. He was supposedly good at that. The quote originated from T.S. Elliot “Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal."

    Music Criticism & Its Discontents

I believe most composers asking for feedback on their works are looking for praise, whether they admit it or not. Most would probably be open to constructive criticism. You are absolutely right. There has to be some concrete basis for us all to agree upon. Music Criticism & Its Discontents

To each his own, I guess. Is music an art or a craft? Probably both. Am I scientific when I improvise, probably not. Did Beethoven see the beauty in a simple folk melody? Yes. Music Criticism & Its Discontents

Off topic again for a second, I have always loved the 3rd. Back to topic, we all hear things differently. That is why I have a tough time criticizing others works. Helping is one thing, ripping it up is another.
  84. fritzmartinbass

    Music Criticism & Its Discontents

I studied with a composer named Larry Austin for seven years. He was taught by John Cage. After I finished a piece, he would always say "do you like it?" He would then say, "that is ALL that matters." This of coarse, pertains to non-commercial music that you are not trying to sell. Most...
