Looking for advice on a portable midi controller

I bought the Arturia MiniLab 3 for this purpose, mostly because it was the only one I could find with decent keys that could fit in my bag. It’s about the same size as a 16” laptop. It’s very well thought out, and the integration with Cubase is smooth. That probably goes for other DAWs as well...

Strategies for surround templates when working with sample libraries

A workaround that doesn’t involve VEPro is to have your surround mix pre-routed, but only work with the Tree mics when writing. Then enabling the rest of the mics when bouncing. It doesn’t quite solve your problem if the point is to write in surround, but nevertheless it can be a good strategy...

Strategies for surround templates when working with sample libraries

If you are listening in surround while writing, the disabled tracks template is the only method I can think of to keep the track count and complexity at a minimum (disabling all the tracks you don’t use). If using VE Pro, why not do a decent quad mix for each instrument group inside VE Pro...

How do you mix orchestral scores in quad?

It’s fun indeed, but I do have to admit that I’ve had moments when I was writing and realized only the speakers in the front were active :) It’s not night and day when writing I would say. However, when focusing on the mix, the surround speakers are crucial.
  9. J

How do you mix orchestral scores in quad?

One operation, or more precisely many operations, but Cubase takes care of it for you since Cubase 10 or 11. Imagine many tracks using the same Hall reverb. It would make sense to set up a FX/Aux track with that reverb plugin, and using track sends to feed the reverb. Earlier you’d have to use...

How do you mix orchestral scores in quad?

If you work in Pro Tools (as sound dep do), you try your best to avoid a session with a mix of mono, stereo, 4.0, 4.1, 5.0, 5.1, 7.0, 7.1, 7.1.2 tracks in order to stay sane :)
  11. J

How do you mix orchestral scores in quad?

Sounds like a great setup! 4.1 is a lot of bang for the buck since you have speakers in the front, speakers in the back and sub. No wasted resources on side speakers and center speaker, which is diminishing returns anyway. Just be aware that you might have to deliver 5.1 or 7.1 if you’re working...
  12. J

How do you mix orchestral scores in quad?

It’s the sub (Low-frequency effects). It’s the .1 in 4.1, 5.1 and 7.1. A very common beginner mistake (guilty as charged) is to send all kinds of bass sounds to the sub, but emphasis should be put on “Effects” in LFE. It’s just for sudden effects such as low drum hits/impacts. The front...
  13. J

How do you mix orchestral scores in quad?

When it comes to LFE; the rule of thumb is to not put anything tonal there. So it's basically reserved for hits, impacts etc. You can do a drama without anything from the score going into the LFE, so be careful.
  14. J

How do you mix orchestral scores in quad?

First of all, may I ask why 4.0 or 4.1? I don't know any network or streaming service that has quad in their delivery specs. It's usually 7.1, or even Dolby Atmos. If you're working with movies, the re-recording mixers tend to prefer 7.1 stems. However, on a practical and technical level, it...

NEW: String Swells Core | Only £39 | Emotive Chamber Ensemble for Kontakt Player

Sounds really great! Congrats on the release! Two questions: - Is it possible not to retrigger notes in the middle of a hairpin? Say, I have a 2 bar crescendo Csus2 (CDG) going into a C chord (CEG), then diminuendo. It would be such a timesaver if that D->E followed the shape of the hairpin...

Whenever I recover a Cubase project from a crash, and Cubase detects that a newer .bak version exist, the new file gets "-01" added to the file name by default. I've found autosave to be unreliable until I save with a new filename. Could that be the case here?

Yes and no! I think Spitfire are bloodsuckers just as much as the next guy :) , but these can be useful for exposed lines. Horns for Blues? Audio Modeling vs Sample Modeling vs Straight Ahead Birth of the Trumpet / Tenor Colossus

    UAD plugins and latency

I thought I'd report back my findings here, because Cubase handles this in a very elegant way it seems. - If you have UAD plugins on the FX buses, the delay compensation doesn't kick in until an audio send is routed to the FX bus. That means you can have UAD plugins sitting on the FX buses...
