Electric - Layered Kontakt instrument - The story so far

Hey there! One thing I like about some devs is when they tell us why and how a lib came to be, and this WIP will be my first, so I'd like to talk to you about it and maybe inspire other people to do the same as I've been inspired by others. Just by looking at the UI you'll notice where the...

    Layers for Tundra

To avoid misunderstandings: this new instrument has nothing to do with Tundra. Electric uses my own samples and my own layers engine, the whole thing made from scratch. I'll start a new thread to avoid confusion. [EDIT: The new thread is here...

    Layers for Tundra

After a lot of thought I feel like I'll never be able to release Layers for Tundra. The first time I talked to SF I thought that possible, but then hols and life got in the way, and nothing happened... and the last time I tried I didn't received a response, so I must assume that the momentum is...

    XY Pad Problem

Hmm, I'm almost brain dead right now (too much heat in my region) but that's interesting. Could you please elaborate on how the scaling works?

    XY Pad Problem

    Yes, but you only need to set the limit ;) This code if you want silence when the pointer in centered: $a := real_to_int((?xy[0] - 0.5) * 2000000.0) if($a < 0) $a := 0 end if $b := real_to_int((1.0 - (?xy[0] - 0.5)) * 2000000.0) if($b < 0) $b := 0 end if $c := real_to_int((?xy[1] - 0.5)...

    XY Pad Problem

    You only need one cursor, so the first declaration is ok. But XY pad values go from 0 to 1, so you need to change your math to something like this: a := real_to_int((?xy[0] - 0.5) * 2000000.0) b := real_to_int((1.0 - (?xy[0] - 0.5)) * 2000000.0) c := real_to_int((?xy[1] - 0.5) * 2000000.0) d :=...

    Falling into madness

Thanks Simon! I wasn't sure about the climax, so I thought filling the sound spectrum, stacking the same instruments again, might work.

    Falling into madness

I'd love to know what you think. The composition is a little repetitive, but so is obsessive thinking, and I was trying to convey madness from that point of view: a madman who thinks he's still a genius, standing in his office, thinking obsessively and looking through some "interesting" papers...

    A sample library wiki?

Nice! I'll read the full doc tomorrow, but from what I've seen it is very thorough.

Sorry, yes, typing too quickly there. I meant need to fill the list.

    A sample library wiki?

Maybe creating a list of devs and libs and allowing people to volunteer, pick 5 (or 10, or...) at a time and then add the content, could sort this out. Of course, we would need to create an updatable list first, but that could also be a collaborative effort. Just throwing ideas to the wind ;)

    A sample library wiki?

Libs could have "replaces old_lib" and "replaced by new_lib" fields. I'd say Albion 1 and Albion One are different libs, so yeah, different pages for different versions, but we could start with just the current libs and, like Wikipedia, just add a link to a still-not-created page for later input...

    A sample library wiki?

Maybe combining the lib table with 3 more could make it easier: INSTRUMENT: ID, NAME (Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, Strings...) SECTION: ID, NAME (I, II, High, Low...) LIBRARY_INSTRUMENT: ID, ID_LIB, ID_INSTRUMENT, COUNT, ID_SECTION This tables would isolate instruments and sections from the...

    A sample library wiki?

No need for me to do any db modeling then :) @MatFluor Would it be possible to change the way instruments and mics are in the "Instrument Details" field ("Violins I (4), Violins II (3)...") to tabular fields? Maybe like instrument/type/number (Violins/I/4, Violins/II/3, Strings/Hi/38...

I could build the database model, tomorrow if life allows it, but it would be important to choose the engine (MySql maybe?).

Same here. The only downside is that new projects do not appear in the recent project list.

    A sample library wiki?

Don't know why anyone would love or hate any developer (a lib yes, we all do) but you are right, it should be about facts. That should mitigate any prejudice and make it plain helpful to everyone.

    A sample library wiki?

I like the idea. @MatFluor Nice first step! (or second ;) ) About the audio files, I think good AND bad demos are important to understand how easy/hard is to use a lib, and how much time it requires to get something good out of it. Anyway, I'm guessing the space required for naked demos would be...

Spitfire Audio - Kepler Orchestra - Available NOW

If Keple's behavior is anything like the demos, I'd say it can work nicely at the edge of silence. I just made an experiment, copying two instances of the demo and changing the sound samples, one with BDT strings and the other with Tundra super sul. The result is better than I anticipated. Here...

What should your daily music quota be?

It is useful when you are close to a deadline, but as @Wolfie2112 said, it isn't necessary. You can try a little experiment. Start watching any TV show episode without volume and underscore it on the fly. Then orchestrate/arrange/improve the result, solve any thematic issues raised, and see how...

    Spitfire kepler. . .

I think it would be nice to have a place to just post demos like @ism suggested. That way everyone would be able to share and listen how libs work while text information would be perfectly readable. In that scenario I think ppl may share more tests and never-to-be-finished tracks using this or...

    MIDI Plugin in VST Format?

C++ is a bit harder to learn, but if you have the time, it would let you do everything you want and more, and it should run faster, cause latency is important. It would also allow you to use the best UI framework possible, if you learn got to use it. And you coul even make a TCP server to...

    Spitfire kepler. . .

Yup, after this I can really imagine them sitting all players in circles (or following the golden ratio) the cellos outside, violas and violins in the center (or the other way around), and then moving, while recording, the A mics in circles and the O mics in a perfect spiral, and maybe even the...

    Eating my words - Spitfire.

Well, Loegria is not in the menu, so I'm layering it with Tundra and BDT, and I think the result will be quite good for the strings. There is something really appealing about layering those 3 libs and playing with different mic positions to balance the more emotional/warm feeling from A1 with...

    Eating my words - Spitfire.

Yup, I just got A1 a few days ago and, for all the gods, I'm trying to adapt myself and find the sweet spots of the lib, but damn, only the strings longs give me something subtle (kind of). The brass looks at me like a hungry beast in the middle of a bloody war, he wants to roar and advance, and...

Music Theory - is there ever a point where you have everything in your composition under control?

Fwiw, my 2c: Theory do constrain you... until you reach some kind of breaking point. Then it allows you to express yourself in different, better or at least commonly accepted ways. First you are 100% free, but you fail big time when trying some not so obvious things. Then you feel limited 'cause...

Testing template for fast production (Tundra + A1 + BDT)

I'm looking for ways to be able to deliver 1 minute of good-sounding tracks in 30 minutes or so, so any comment on the sound/mix/etc. would be much appreciated. Thanks! Here a quickly improvised track to test my new template for fast production (Tundra, A1 and DBT): Thanks for listening!

    Albion ONE is Half Price!

I was intrigued about this, so I tried... and it allowed me to load the presets from the installation directory. The only thing I don't like is that, every time I want to load a new one, I have to browse from "C:\Users\Username\Documents\Native Instruments\Kontakt 5".

Spitfire Spring Wish List Announced ;)

Thanks! Yup, the string longs are a bit strange at some velocities/cc1. I like the overall sound, and how easy is to get a dramatic feeling, but I'll have to be careful with the "pressure" to keep it sounding "natural", so I'm thinking about layering the Tundra strings to "soften" that effect...

Spitfire Spring Wish List Announced ;)

Very easy IMHO. It is my go-to lib when I just want to play soft and noisy things, and when I want to add a slightly weird character to other sounds. The volume is a bit hard to control (you may want to modify some patches to avoid that), but other than that I think it's a very playable lib. I...

Spitfire Spring Wish List Announced ;)

Soooo, after much thought, I'm downloading A1: No eq+comp required (that means more time to create new things, instead of going through the mixing/mastering rabbit hole), and cheaper than SStO. And, as a bonus, that sound is everywhere and people know it and are used to it. So, basically I've...

Spitfire Spring Wish List Announced ;)

Would you recommend SStO core or Albion One as a bread-and-butter orchestra (about same price in 2 days)? SStO looks good because I'm not much into epic-hybrid stuff and individual sections means more control, but time is broken around me and I'm a bit tired of choosing between writing and...

Just HOW Important are Extra Microphones?

Very, very, very important. My only bread-and-butter orchestra is EWQLSO, the gold version, and every time I use it I feel like an alchemist, mixing reverbs, comps, etc. like crazy, so nowadays I only use the solo patches most times. That limitation taught me a lot back in the day, but it also...

    I'm a fraud

Sorry, I was convoluted and a bit sarcastic, but I didn't mean you weren't right. On the contrary. I was just pointing out that, when it comes to oneself, it can be really hard to evolve from 'knowing' to 'applying', and from my own experience, if you don't think about that, it is easy to fail...

The end of Albion 2 Loegria?

@ism Well, the project was working fine, and I've used some of the more useful patches in some private pieces, but the timing wasn't right and life happens, so I'll contact the @Spitfire Team again to ask if we can do it now or if it's too late.

Sooooo easy to think you know that... ...and so haaaaaaard to really unsertand it. The end of Albion 2 Loegria?

@ccarreira @ism Reading your comments I just remembered that last year I made an experiment bringing something like the BDT layers to Tundra (https://vi-control.net/community/threads/layers-for-tundra.74026/), although first holidays and then life made it impossible to continue. Maybe I should...
