So, what Mac are you going to get next? (Poll)

Go for it, it’s easier than it seems. It’s also much more rewarding to build your rig yourself, you’ll end up a savvy IT genius before you know it ;)

So, what Mac are you going to get next? (Poll)

Until Apple drops Intel for Arm, which I hope won’t happen too soon, I will happily stick to Hackintoshes. I can build them according to my needs, and they cost less. A properly built hackintosh with regularly updated kexts even beats the real thing compatibility and stability wise over the...

    Synchron Strings

I wouldn’t trust the demos by VSL, they are often deceptive, and I think it’s a shame. The patch is very good on slow to moderate tempos, it does struggle a bit on faster ones. We’d need another one with shorter legato transitions, or a way to adjust them to taste, in my opinion.

Single monster or master of the slaves?

My feeling, too. One machine is now enough horsepower in my experience. Allows for large templates, while keeping your setup simple and easy to manage.

    Synchron Strings

I have to agree with you and many others on this matter. The demos on their website are too often very poorly made, and the cantabile tracks are no exception. This is something I fail to understand, given how important they are. You don’t botch your demos, they will make or break a deal for...

    Synchron Strings

The Cantabile violins are definitely a step in the right direction, in my opinion. Let's say it was all well worth the wait ;) Congratulations VSL, I hope all other sections will follow

NI / Galaxy Instruments / Nils Frahm -- NOIRE

I second that. The particles engine looks very interesting, but VSL’s own Yamaha CFX has a much deeper, cleaner and broader sound, in my view. It has a lot more samples, too.

    Synchron Strings

I think the difference lies in how players perform a single note (or even two when sampling legato transitions) versus an actual piece of music. You can’t expect the same liveliness in the former. That’s also why strings sound thinner overall, it must be hard to imbue samples with a bit of...

    Synchron Strings

In my opinion Synchron Strings is flawed in many aspects, but VSL’s other strings libraries are not. I find Dimension Strings very versatile and a joy to program. As to why they didn’t try to fix SS instead of synchronizing older material, that is really beyond me, for all the good reasons...

New iMacs released. Up to 8 cores on non-pro model.

Hackintosh. Do yourself a favour and build one. If you fear you won’t be able to put it together yourself then pay someone who knows how to. Hackintosh. You end up with a machine that’s tailored to your needs, at a fraction of what you’d pay for an iMac. Those computers have parts that belong...

    Why Vienna Ensemble Pro?

In my experience Logic is much snappier with the samples hosted in VEP. I also find VEP distributes CPU cycles better than Logic does. Another small benefit is light project file sizes.

    VSL Synchron Stirngs

In my opinion the Synchron line is fantastic, except for the strings, which are very underwhelming in many aspects. There is a long long thread here about this product.

I’ll mention both best and worst as interestingly enough they come from the same developer and emulate the same range of instruments: Best: VSL Dimension Strings Worst: VSL Synchron Strings

    Synchron Strings Legato?

Synchron Strings I is mostly a huge let-down to me, as Piotrek quite exhaustively summed up. Makes me somewhat angry and sad as the rest of the line is stunning.

VSL Synchron Steinway D is coming...

Stunning. Check (and compare) the demos that were also made with the CFX, the sound is gorgeous.

    VSL keeps on synchron-izing

I view this new 'expansion' -which basically amounts to 10 articulations- as yet another slap in the face of their customers. The price tag is simply not right in relation to the content that is offered. Also, I suppose the new material was produced so as to blend properly with the remastered...

    Agile strings

Yes Virharmonic looks very promising. I would really like for them to try and sample sections when they’re done with their solo instruments, as they sound gorgeous. The scripting definitely feels like a step forward.

    Agile strings

Yes. I initially wanted to name this ‘Fast arpeggios’, but the idea was to discuss the requirements for such writing in the world of samples, so echoing that in the title felt relevant. If memory serves, much of what you hear in this passage is either called performance trill legato or...

SF Studio Strings V CSS??? - Opinions

Thanks for the links Consona, although I mainly hear staccato/spiccato patches playing fast in “runs”. What I have in mind is actual legato playing. I posted an example in a thread I conveniently named Agile legato... ;)

    Agile strings

Hey there, I've just dug up this small test I did a (long) while ago. It's been seven years since Dimension Strings, and I'd very much like to hear something that performs as smoothly as this. It's certainly not perfect but I would probably never achieve anything remotely close with another...

SF Studio Strings V CSS??? - Opinions

In my experience, the only library that can pull realistic-ish fast legato playing is Dimension Strings, since it is so consistent while offering to program each player individually. Time consuming, but works very nicely.

VSL Synchron Strings I Announced (Nov. Release)

I’ve used plenty of VSL before Synchron and in my opinion they should definitely try and go the wet route because it’s different, and because it works if done well. Silent stage means a bit more flexible, a bit less organic. I totally want to hear their take on more organic. They got it wrong...

VSL Synchron Strings I Announced (Nov. Release)

I just completed a few projects using the Synchron libraries extensively. The Strings shorts are a pleasure to work with. I managed beautiful textures with FX Strings, and the CFX is also a joy to use. I effortlessly achieved clear and defined mixes where everything blends and glues well. There...

VSL Demo featuring Synchron Strings I layered with Synchronized Chamber Strings

@JBacal I was indeed specifically grumbling about the transitions. I understand the benefits of layering different ensemble sizes, be it with samples or live recordings. Thank you for sharing this piece, keep up the excellent work. Cheers

VSL Demo featuring Synchron Strings I layered with Synchronized Chamber Strings

I’m afraid I agree that everything sounds lovely but the strings. They sound especially fake at 5’00 in the fortissimo part, in my opinion. Congratulations on an otherwise very good job. One shouldn’t have to layer 2 strings libraries to achieve somewhat convincing transitions.

    VSL SYNCHRON-ized Chamber Strings

Yes... I don't understand why VSL won't spend their valuable time fixing what needs to be fixed instead of serving us rehashed. I think their internal decision making these past few months has been terrible.

VSL Synchron Strings I Announced (Nov. Release)

Do share something, I want to like this library very much. I immediately managed satisfying legato transitions with Dimension Strings but never came close with SS1. I also find the mid mics reedy rather than precise. Bypassing them helps a bit, I couldn't find a way to EQ them to taste.
  37. Salorom

VSL Synchron Strings I Announced (Nov. Release)

It’s not only the legato, the sustains sound thin and lifeless, the sforzando articulation is almost a scam, there is no portamento. And who needs a 12s (shortest) to 30s (longest) crescendo/diminuendo? It doesn’t make any sense. Synchron Percussion, FX Strings and Yamaha CFX are gorgeous and a...

VSL Synchron Strings I Announced (Nov. Release)

It baffles me that VSL did not manage to capitalise on their long experience when they planned this library. Only they could pull off Dimension Strings, which is such a joy to use and program. Also I own the whole of the Synchron line and the rest in my opinion is stunning. The sound of FX...

VSL Synchron Strings I Announced (Nov. Release)

I sincerely hope there are new recordings/scripting coming and would commend VSL on such a wise decision. Then again I wonder why Synchron Percussion has not yet been released in its new format as it was fine as a VI-based library.

VSL Synchron Strings I Announced (Nov. Release)

I agree twice. If SyS1 stays the same in its Synchron Player version it’s bound to be detrimental to VSL and their credibility as one of the very best players in the business. They can’t dismiss what has already raised so many eyebrows. The legato issues is one thing. Their decision to not add...

How much RAM to load the whole of EW Hollywood Orchestra?

Yes I’m pretty sure I’d get much better results if the same computer was running Windows instead of MacOS. Maybe I’ll turn it into a slave when I build a new rig. Pretty lame from EW not to ever address this issue properly, though.

How much RAM to load the whole of EW Hollywood Orchestra?

Yes I actually bought HS and HB quite a long time ago, then went for HW and HP when a HO deal came up, thinking I might manage to run it all on one computer. I'm sure my next setup will be up to the task but this one still falls short. A full 16-bit mains only would be great. Now that the price...
