    New CA Plates Arrived!

One day I will affix them to a cooler car but my 2007 Scion will do nicely for now. And as my first boss used to say, if you want to be taken seriously as an artist you can’t drive too nice of a car.

Best Backup Solutions for Windows 10?

Thanks everyone for chiming in. Anyone using File History, not using it because of issues I mentioned or others? I like versioning and OS-level implementation seems promising but my faith in it has been compromised.

Best Backup Solutions for Windows 10?

Thanks. Yeah I'm using a 1TB USB3 drive to clone a 500GB or so system drive.

Best Backup Solutions for Windows 10?

Hey everyone, I recently rebuilt my PC an reinstalled Windows 10 Pro and am running into some issues getting File History to work. It said it was backing up but when I go to see previous versions for a file there's nothing there. I've turned the backup on and off in Settings a few times but I...

    Not renewing Pro Tools "subscription"

I bought a Pro Tools Ultimate perpetual license earlier this year but I realized it was a mistake and ended up selling it. The reason being that after the first year they charge $399/year for the upgrade and support plan, which seems pretty steep especially after they delayed a compatibility...

    Favorite CPU-light VST3 Reverbs

Curious to hear what your favorite CPU-light VST3 reverbs might be. I'm looking for something I would be able to run lots of instances of as inserts (rather than on a send) across many tracks. Valhalla Vintage Verb served me well when in Pro Tools, but I'd like to find something of similar...

The new 2019 Mac Pro Announced! - Apple is back!

I just bought a not-half-bad 43-inch 4K LG display from Costco for $600 including CA tax. Could get another and would’ve spent the same as Apple’s display mounting system alone will cost.

    Cheesegrater mac is back!

I think this will probably end up being a good-to-great machine in spite of the valid potential shortcomings that others have pointed out. But the price point really gets me. The baseline spec of the previous Mac Pro was $3000 USD. They have doubled that. And by the time those of us who require...

    Cheesegrater mac is back!

Why is the baseline version of this machine $1000 more than the base iMac Pro, which comes with a screen and I believe 1TB of storage rather than 256GB on the new Mac Pro?

Why choose Pro Tools over Logic?

It's not so much that Pro Tools can do something that Logic can't, but I like the editing paradigm that having an edit cursor allows, it just feels nicer and more natural to use to me, like a word processor. Being able to make selections and nudge them around with key commands is cool, and...

Why choose Pro Tools over Logic?

Been a while since I used it, I’m likely wrong or it has been updated.

Why choose Pro Tools over Logic?

I personally prefer Pro Tools to Logic even for MIDI. One big thing is that I hate not being able to see more than one MIDI controller lane at a time which is the case in Logic. But there are a lot of little editing and workflow things that to me are nicer in Pro Tools. Weirdly, it seems more...

Pro Tools has some such feature. I think it's called Cloud Collaboration. Never used it so I can't speak to its quality.

    I9 9900k - No slave

Instead of using a template I made track presets with one articulation per track and only added what I needed. I don't really have the RAM to have have a massive template loaded at all times and I also like to be able to tweak the Kontakt instruments and save them with the project which isn't...

    I9 9900k - No slave

Here's an example of a fairly complex track that I sequenced in Pro Tools using 70+ instances of VEP, each hosting its own articulation/instrument. The computer didn't break a sweat with a 128 buffer in PT and 4x (512) for VEP instruments until I added some effects to the master channel at which...

    I9 9900k - No slave

I'm getting great performance with that CPU using one articulation per track on a single machine (with and without VEP). Seems to me with a more traditional VEP setup the issue would be RAM limits though.

Cubase vs logic... is hans zimmer right?

From what I understand, Pro Tools HD in the TDM days used a 48-bit fixed point summing engine that could be "pushed" — with high track counts (?) or by turning the levels up to create some distortion in the mix bus that was pleasing to some ears. But with pretty much all DAWs including Pro Tools...

Cubase 10 Performance MacOS Mojave vs Windows 10

Yes my "Mac" is a Hack, I understand it's not the same as an Apple machine. But given its home-brew nature I'm surprised it turns on at all let alone outperforms my the Windows boot. I followed the guides to optimize Windows when I built the PC for power management and CPU performance. It's...

Cubase 10 Performance MacOS Mojave vs Windows 10

Wasn’t trying to knock your system by the way! But I was really surprised about Cubase performance improvements going from a 12 core cheese grater to my home built 6 core i7 8700k rig last year (since upgraded to 9900k). Thanks for taking the time to run those tests and sharing the results.

Cubase 10 Performance MacOS Mojave vs Windows 10

I am on Mojave. My tests are pretty unscientific, I just added an audio loop and made a few tracks with the Cubase sampler, noodled some MIDI, and added some stock plugins from Steinberg and duplicated until my CPU meter started to max out then compared the results on the other OS. Windows is...

Cubase 10 Performance MacOS Mojave vs Windows 10

I had a chance to put together a Cubase session of 272 audio and sampler tracks and some plugins to test on the Mac and Windows partitions of my Hackintosh. With the same buffer and ASIO guard settings the MacOS version outperformed the Windows version with the CPU at about 88%, whereas on...

One of those wtf moments in Cubase for sure.

Cubase 10 Performance MacOS Mojave vs Windows 10

Yeah. I just like to hit the track freeze "snowflake" icon when I get to a stopping place in my sessions but Cubase makes you do this on track at a time, whereas Pro Tools and others let you freeze as many as you want in one click. Plenty of other great export and rendering options in Cubase though!

Cubase 10 Performance MacOS Mojave vs Windows 10

Hit songs have been written and major motion pictures scored with Cubase on Mac. It's definitely a viable option these days! The reason I asked about Mac vs. PC performance was that those little hiccups and bits of under-optimized code seem to really add up when working with big templates and/or...

Cubase 10 Performance MacOS Mojave vs Windows 10

Thanks for sharing your experiences. In this old thread Evil Dragon points out that one of the factors for performances differences is the file system — that NTFS is better optimized than HFS+. With Apple's new APFS file system I wondered if that might no longer be a factor. That said I recently...

Cubase 10 Performance MacOS Mojave vs Windows 10

I'm getting Cubase 10 up and running on my MacOS Mojave Hackintosh after a detour into Pro Tools land. I'm running into an odd issue that I asked about here. This has me wondering if Cubase still runs a bit better on Windows. From what I understand the performance gap between operating systems...

Trouble Renaming Tracks Cubase 10 MacOS Mojave

I'm running into an odd issue when trying to rename tracks in Cubase 10.0.20 on MacOS Mojave. Sometimes when I double click over name it won't show me an editable text field no matter how many times I click. Sometimes it works fine. Is this a known issue? Does anyone know how to fix? Thanks!

    Pro Tools to Cubase..

I use both and like both, and I agree with strengths and weaknesses that others have stated. I am a fan of Pro Tools' overall layout, logic, and coherent workflow — I love having having an edit cursor! The lack of customizability sometimes feels frustrating, but sometimes seems like one less...

    New Sample Relay Challenge...

I added this comment on YouTube but wanted to post here too... To add to your Paco de Lucía/Concierto de Aranjuez example — Joaquín Rodrigo, that piece's composer, was blind from the age of three and wrote out his compositions in braille. So in a sense he too didn't "read music" in the purely...

    My 'Library Album'

I like writing in D. It's satisfying! I was hoping that by choosing the ugliest font possible music supervisors everywhere would start having nightmares about it and remember my music. But you're right and I changed it. It still sucks but it's harder to argue with Arial. One of these days...

    My 'Library Album'

Man, I hear you on all points. For myself, at this point in my life, I want to make music that has some utility — whether it's contributing to films or music libraries, or making songs that people can enjoy (or enjoy to hate). And with that goal you have to conform at least somewhat to norms and...

Star Wars III: The Immolation Scene - CSS/CSB/SWAM

Great work! The strings sound a touch harsh to me, did you do much processing to them? I don’t have Cinematic Studio Strings yet so I’m not familiar with the sound. They are on my radar though as I’m always a little underwhelmed by the Spitfire legato patches and I understand CSS excels in that...

    My 'Library Album'

I haven't heard back from any yet, so no feedback to report! Yes, probably risky in a way. But I pay may bills doing photo retouching and not from music (yet), and I had a slow month with that and wanted to work on a composing project that was more substantive than just making some random...

    My 'Library Album'

Thanks for the kind words. For now I'm calling the album "Dream Quarantine." I thought "Dream" sounded ethereal and romantic, and "Quarantine" slightly off-kilter and potentially dangerous, and by combining the two I hoped to evoke a story that has all those elements, potentially taking place...
