SSO Mockup - "Leaving Hogwarts" from Harry Potter

Ha, yes it certainly helps (and thanks!). I confirmed today that the original recording location was AIR as well, so that's a nice bonus

SSO Mockup - "Leaving Hogwarts" from Harry Potter

Thanks! It's mostly a matter of taste really, this is mainly Decca Tree and Outriggers with a little bit of close and Ambient where needed. As for layering, I bring the Solo Strings down until I feel like they would sit well in the section itself. They are in there, but ideally you don't want to...

SSO Mockup - "Leaving Hogwarts" from Harry Potter

Thanks a lot! Honestly there's no real secret other than trusting your ears. I prefer not to automate my levels through faders and generally try to get them close and only micro adjust using Expression (CC11). Mocking up an already existing piece really does help to get balance though!

Thanks a lot! I believe it was both AIR and Abbey Road, so I'm not sure about this cue in particular. I know that Simon Rhodes engineered though.

SSO Mockup - "Leaving Hogwarts" from Harry Potter

Hello everyone, you may (or most likely may not) remember that last year I did a mockup of Williams' "Dartmoor, 1912" from War Horse. I recently decided to take a shot at another and this time went for one of my favourite cues from the first Harry Potter film. I had a lot of fun with this one...

    Spitfire Legato Performance Palette Manual?

Hey guys, The Legato Performance patches are essentially the legacy legatos. The differences here are that you can change the velocities/speeds that different transitions trigger by Ctrl/Cmd + clicking the articulations. You can also use this to see the currently set values (so if you wanted to...

What's not to like about Spitfire Chamber Strings?

Thanks, I just spent a lot of time on it is all! This piece had so many divisi parts that I opted for SCS in the end. The unison moments could have probably benefited from SSS too, however at the time my template was maxing out my RAM enough anyway... It’s SCS with Solo Strings layered, so no...

What's not to like about Spitfire Chamber Strings?

Ah yes, that's because I used the rest of the SSO in the mockup as well. I generally include Chamber Strings as part of the SSO.

What's not to like about Spitfire Chamber Strings?

Speaking as a composer and not a Spitfire employee for a moment: SCS is definitely my personal favourite String library, and despite what you'd think can actually sound quite large too. If you wanted an example, this John Williams mockup is SCS using the Outriggers/Ambient as the main...

2 questions about Spitfire’s user interface.

The reverb slider starting central means there is some verb being applied by default. Dragging the fader to the left means less reverb (or none all the way), whereas all the way to the right means more.

SSO Mockup - "Dartmoor, 1912" from War Horse

Thanks a lot Paul. I really should have taken the time to use SSS, I think that the unison parts could have certainly benefitted! The microphone mix is almost all Ambient & Outriggers. I also just compared the SoundCloud link to the WAV... So instead I've now added the Dropbox link with the...

SSO Mockup - "Dartmoor, 1912" from War Horse

Hey Cass! Thanks - glad it was tolerable! I had a pretty weird 'rule' as there was so much divisi in this. Any time the section splits I would bring each instance down around 3-4dB. Whenever it was a single line (suchas the unison parts) it was always at the default dB. I hope that makes sense...

Sorry for the very late bump here, but I've uploaded a rather shoddy attempt at a DAWCast. A few people asked for it, so hopefully it's at least helpful in some way. Apologies for the lack of CC data in the Strings - there's so much damn info in there that it was lagging, so I ended up...

Thinking of buying Spitfire chamber strings/brass/winds collection. Yay or nay?

No doubled RR's actually, but I did layer Solo Strings for certain lines. I think the Woodwinds benefit nicely from the Outriggers, it gives them a little more 'distance' which I love (it's also worth narrowing the stereo image slightly).

Thinking of buying Spitfire chamber strings/brass/winds collection. Yay or nay?

Not to derail the discussion here, but as an example here's a mockup of some John Williams using only the SSO. I like to think it's at least a good representation of what you can expect from the libraries in this context. There's also no Symphonic Strings in there, just the extra mics of SCS...

Sorry to reply on my personal account here, I’m on the train home and thought I’d give you a quick answer: 1. It’s my understanding that arpeggios are the larger intervals - similar to what Paul is doing in the opening of his walkthrough. 2. Looks like you got this one! 3. Time machine does...

First Look: Spitfire Studio Strings by Spitfire Audio

They're the same. With the standard CTA mics the easy mix would generally balance between Close, Tree and Ambient. As Core only has Tree, it'll instead just control the verb.

First Look: Spitfire Studio Strings by Spitfire Audio

That's correct. The easy mix fader will control the amount of built-in convolution reverb in Core.

SPITFIRE - Symphonic Expansion Pack Firesale This Week Only!

SSO Mockup - "Dartmoor, 1912" from War Horse

Hey Cass, thanks for your kind comment! There is indeed reverb on this, although it's quite subtle (as was anything done in the mastering stage). I think the most important thing is finding a good balance in the mockup itself, and from this most of the other things will often fall into place...

SSO Mockup - "Dartmoor, 1912" from War Horse

Thanks a lot! This is all mainly Outriggers and Ambient mics. As for the imaging/placement, I actually narrow the stereo images of certain signals a little bit (I think the woodwinds in particular benefit a lot from this). SSO Mockup - "Dartmoor, 1912" from War Horse

Thanks Tanuj! I'm a bit of a sucker for distance in samples which is why there isn't much close in there, although I did layer Solo Strings in the hope of adding a bit more detail. The mix in general is actually based on a live performance from the John Williams Prom in 2017. If you compare that...
