What's new

Looking for Arps, Pads, Synths for Trailer Music -What Libraries Should I Be looking for?

How are the synths in komplete 12? I'm quite new to synthesis and looking to augment some of my pieces with some sound design elements and some good synthesis :) I would buy omnisphere but after just buying komplete 12 ultimate I'm not sure I can afford it.

Sounds like you've made a decision already, intentional or not, when it comes to synths 😁
There's entirely usable and good synths included. Some are a bit old now, but that doesn't make them sound bad. Clearly the marquee is Massive X. But Monark is great, and so are some of the other Reactor based synths. Enough there to keep you busy.

If you need a free arp tool, just go get BlueArp, stick it ahead of your synth, and program away (the presets are a bit stale). Or use your iPhone or iPad - tons of MIDI (and audio) effects you can route through.

I suggest spending a few months getting to know what you now own before deciding to look around to fill in gaps/replacements.

Once you get Omnisphere2 there’s a whole world to discover in 3rd party presets from audiority, ilio, man makes noise, the unfinished, string audio and others.

Interesting choice. Like the OP, I am interested intros types of sounds. However, I have no interest in sound design, so Elysion, with seemingly endless but easy to use options might be the ticket. I was hoping to see it on a BF sale!

Yes, Elysion is really great, for me has become my favorite toy since I bought it! It doesn't seem to be on sale though.

Omnisphere is fantastic as well, I used it in so many tracks!

Both great bits of advice, thank you both!
The only that's holding me back from getting omni is (of course lol) the price. Is it truly worth it? I know there isn't usually sales on it.
Are there other libraries that would do more niche melodic trailer stuff that cost less? Thanks again!
Yeah the price is a bit high and it's a shame you can't demo it... As others have pointed out it's first call for me as well... Perhaps do some digging on Youtube to see what you think..

Plugin Guru tends to go deep on how to use each synthesizer he sells patches for... The link below should be useful in showing you how deep you can go with it...

Also a video of some EDM producer using one of Omni's craziest features, Sound Lock. (This feature alone is insane. Nothing else I know has this. It's invaluable...)

(The sounds in the vids are a bit EDM, but should show you it's way beyond any typical synth... Frankly I haven't found anything else that does what it does, let a lone is an endless source o inspiration...)

Also one other really cool unique thing to Omnisphere, The Orb...

Omnisphere is a great wavetable synth, I use it from the first version.

But for Modern Hybrid Scoring, Trailers Music... is not my first choice.

89% of presets have a little bit of "old sound" for example

Omnisphere have a great potential ( I think ... infinite ) , an incredible waverom but it needs a lot of work on it, or an use of Omnisphere libraries designed for modern cinematic music as starting point
(there are some very interesting add-ons).

And in many case ... The Time is Money....when a I create music for a Trailers.. or other situations when I need of the "of the right sound" , I prefer more immediate tools.

When I have time, I use Omnisphere to create my own sounds for Omnisphere.

So what is your first choice then? ;)

I'm sound design, so I prefer create my self the correct sound.
Anyway There are many Libraries for Kontakt more in "focus" if we are talking of " trailers music" or cinematic music.

Omnisphere is of course a " Must To Have " for anyone, but needs more time and experience to bring out the right sound for Modern Trailer Music, or you need to add libraries for Omnisphere made for this purpose if you don't have the time or experience to do it.

But if we talk of the best " handyman " Synth... ok Omnisphere is the first choice.

If you're still looking for some interesting libraries for trailer music I think Heaviocity has some interesting ones.

I also like Sugar Bytes Aparillo a lot when it comes to experimental spatial sounds, in case you want to get creative...

Omnisphere is way more than wavetable though.

It's wavetable, + an 80GB sample library (of some fairly unique stuff), + granular, + FM, elements of V.A., and although perhaps somewhat limited (for now), it still has the ability to import your own audio which gives you pretty incredible power if you pair it with sound lock, the orb, etc... Not to mention you can still apply the same synthesis methods mentioned above to your own audio.

Just saying calling Omnisphere a wavetable synth is selling Omnisphere quite a bit short.

Of Course but:

I know Omnisphere very well, it's certainly not just a wavetable. The point is that Omnisphere is very powerful but you have to work on it. Not born with "ready" sounds for the purpose in my opinion (we're talking about Trailer Music). You do anything if you are capable and you have time. But starting, he doesn't immediately offer me the sounds I am looking for. In the last years I have been making trailers for Dinsey and Fox I have used Omnisphere sometime. While I used a lot more many other Kontakt libraries (8Dio, Hybrid Two, Zero-G, Audio Impera, and this kind of Hybrid Libraries). I repeat Omnisphere is a must to have, but if you ask me what you are looking for something for trailers music..I'm not telling you Omnisphere as killer tools.

Cheers

:)

Lol even though I could totally plug my own plugin here I would have to say Omnisphere HANDS DOWN, for this kinda stuff.

When it comes to synth stuff, everyone should own Omnisphere first THEN move onto more niche and specific libraries to augment it.

Thanks for chiming in Daniel. :) Big fan of your libraries, I actually own Bravo and Alpha, and love them both! But I still feel like I'm just scratching the surface with them, which is great!

I just don't know if I can justify Omnisphere at this moment, trying to pick up other products during these Black Friday sales and I don't want to blow my budget. :roflmao: (But I just know that eventually, Omnisphere will be inevitable, just like Thanos)

Checked out some stuff from audio imperia, keepforest, and others. There's a lot of trailer libraries on the market that includes all the whooshes, drones, brahms, hits, etc., but not a ton that of those kinds of niche libraries that solely focus on the synth/ melodic side of things.

Could libraries like Elysion or Ethera be something I could narrow this down too? These libraries seem to mainly focus on the synth side of things.

Checkout out Zebra as well, but if I end up buying that plus the HZ dark zebra soundbanks it'd come out to around $328, at that point, I might as well spend the extra cash and just buy ominpshere! haha!

Depending on the one you get, Ethera is focused most heavily on vocals. Or, at least, that's what I focus on with the two I have! If you want to focus on pads, but not Omnisphere, Elysion seems like a good choice (I'd love to buy that one, too). If you want a number of tools for hybrid scoring on the synth and especially vocals side, Ethera. The only solo vocalist I've heard that's as good or better is Audio Imperia Hangar 4... but that's ONLY vocals, which I find too steep as a hobbyist even at $99 on sale. Once you get an Ethera package, you can get more for 20% off all the time, usually on top of sales. Like now. I could pick up Etherea Soundscapes 2.0 for ~$50 (someday!).

The vocals are cool but I’m not really interested that at the moment. Definitely focused on acquiring synth sounds!! So I guess that could eliminate ethera for now??

Elysion seems so cool. Too bad its a newer release and it isn’t discounted for Black Friday!

Don't be fooled... Ethera (EVI and all others) are WAY more than vocals. In fact, vocals are just a bonus (which happens to be excellent). The synth part is fantastic. If you want to load and go, get Ethera. If you want to sound design and find your personal sound, get Omnisphere. Both are top notch.

You should explore all of it. There are things in the Kontakt library that would surprise you.

Yeah - use them for vocals, but they have loads of content. I feel I mischaracterized them - GOLD is really good (I also have EVI2) and will have a v2 next year with a huge amount more content. Go to their website and find a comparison table, or message Stefano on the board here. They are hybrid scoring toolboxes (focused on synth, drums, and vocals).

Elysium is focused on pads (and related) and sounds very good at that.
