The most COMPLEX pop song ever

I was going to name this thread like "who of you EIS guys wrote it?" after listening a few seconds into it. But a little research showed that actually Sam Winans has apparently been not only a pupil of Spud Murphy but also been teaching EIS, and on his homepage writes about working for Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, the writers of this song. So ... this seems to be the connection. But this is just my assumption, most probably somebody here knows much more about it.

Anyways, a video that is fun to watch, especially how Rick Beato really is enthusiastic about the ever new chord surprises. Enjoy!

Thanks, I saw the Beato video when it was originally posted. The EIS connection is cool.

Beato was a George Russell student (NE Conservatory) and obviously now has his own music line he promotes.

Would be interesting to hear if Spud and Russell's Lydian Chromatic Concept were pals. Don't know.

TBH, I am unfamiliar with either system, although there are EIS grads on this forum such as @Farkle who'd be savvy to this.

I have not talked with Sam for awhile. I used to work on a show for 3 yrs using his studio at the time (my first TV series Kid's Incorporated) in Hollywood. I doubt Sam has a connection to this song but I could ask him. I think he moved to Idaho and not sure what he is doing...btw it is Sam Winans. Sam was an EIS graduate before I knew what EIS was. He told me about EIS along with Tim Torrance, Dan Sawyer and Glenn Jordan. I eventually started the course thanks to their influence. Probably saved my career.

There are definitely moments in the song that I can say, "Oh, if this were written by an EIS'er, here's trading parts from this lesson, oh, here's 3 part harmony in 4ths chord progression, etc.". I don't know if Sam was involved in the composition, but there's definitely moments where an EIS person would have made those choices. Notably, how the chorus keeps rising a half step (or E1). Spud loved his E1 motions, hehe. :)

Regardless, this song is fantastic harmonically, and I love the possibility that it had an EIS part of it. Again, Craig needs to confirm, but what a great tune! Thanks for sharing, Hannes!

Thank you Craig, corrected.
Yes, if you have the opportunity to ask him about this it would be very interesting!

It is the smoothness of those transitions that made me associate EIS immediately.
