DP11 and Sound Variations!

whoa!!! After 4 minutes I was like wha??? *thats* what those buttons are for? What a time saver! Why didn't MOTU put any of this in the freaking 1000 page manual?

seems like they should be marketing the hell out of it also. its right on the heels of S1's Sound Variations feature and I think a major marketing point. But anyway, let the articulation wars begin!

This looks amazing but as someone who has never used articulation maps & never gets that deep in midi-land. I’m a bit intimidated with the complexity of all of this and really don’t understand what all of this actually brings to the table.
This looks quite powerful assuming if I can get my head around it. 😜

Looks cool (I think I'm following all this...). So... would it be possible to do this via VE Pro? Most of my libraries are on slave machines.

DP11 just keeps giving -- it has so many hidden features, not well covered in their docs.

Their articulation feature at surface level looks quite basic, but it's well implemented.

Edit -- although Studio One just picks up the sound variations straight out of the plugin, with no need to sync -- I tried this with Halion Sonic and it just failed to read them, stating that the plugin 'doesn't support this feature'!, which is clearly not the case as Steinberg devised the original VST spec.

Just giving this a whirl - not playing ball with Spitfire libraries. I wonder if this is limited to certain devs at the moment?

Yes... the plug-in needs to support it. VSL Synchron Player was the first VST instrument to support PreSonus Sound Variations. No. 2 is East West Opus. And hopefully, more developers will follow...

The same functionality is now available in DP11 as well.

Not yet but VSL already mentioned that this is planned for the future.

HALion Sonic (VST3) only supports the IKeyswitchController interface (which is a VST3 feature), not Sound Variations. Studio One supports both. For the user, it looks (almost) identical but technically they're two different things.

This is amazing. Finally DAW-makers are looking at articulation-switching from the point of view of the user, who has for years been muttering, "I wish it could automatically do THIS" (whatever it is I do umpteen times over and over again).

First Studio One. Now Digital Performer. DP has upped the ante. Let the articulations get started in earnest. And Cubase users look to Steinberg to get off it's keister in this area.

I am told that DP11 is also supporting both protocols in some way.

I guess things will become more clear if and when more instruments also support either of these protocols.

If that's true, even better! However, there are very few instruments that support VST3 keyswitches at all. I myself know only HALion / HALion Sonic (I'm wondering if there is a list out there).

Yep I agree.

In general I think this type of feature is mainly useful with instruments where the user is likely to change the keyswitches frequently, or there might be a lot of divergent presets with different key switch configurations. With many instruments you can get a map once and set it and forget it, so a dynamic system like this is a bit overkill. Synchron and play are both designed to allow heavy key switch mods so it makes sense for them, but ironically in vepro it can’t currently be used anyway. Maybe later.

Yes, the Steve Steele video assumes I know more about Articulation Maps than I do. As a DP user I've only watched the AM fun from the sidelines until DP11 and several of the terms and concepts in the video were unfamiliar to me. The DP manual isn't much help in this regard. It barely gives an overview of how to use AMs. And has no mention, I don't think, that only VST3 instruments have the extra capability the SS video is demonstrating...is it now recommended that we enable and use the VST3 versions of instruments in DP? If so that's that's quite a switch.

My understanding is that sound variations do not require vst3 but in the case of synchron vsl only implemented the sound variations feature into the vst3 version of their plugin they did not add it to their vst2 version even though it is possible. It’s not my impression that sound variations generally require vst3.

In the other hand it’s also not clear what motu has done whether that feature will only work with vst3 or not. We’ll just have to wait and see what comes out with various instruments.

I think this feature will be very useful with certain players like synchron and opus where we might me manipulating keyswitch configs dynamically a lot. But other libraries that have a hard coded keyswitch set and mostly unlikely to change it, then I think this feature will be overkill and even complicates things if you accidentally hit the wrong button or something. It’s not that hard to create an articulation map from scratch yourself, takes ten minutes or just buy babylon waves for most stuff. The value of the dynamic maps comes to play with synchron if you start rearrangeing the dimension layers and key switches frequently
