Synth Sound Design-ideas on making sound like this, which FX?

Trying to figure out how to make sound like this example. Ideas? Some type of bs synth, braam start but what I can't figure out is, let's these are quarter notes beats 2, 4, etc... some type of envelope filter w harmonics and more harmonics each time added? Any ideas for FX or synth programming to achieve this?....Or maybe there's a synth that does this kind of thing? Thanks!!

Could be some FM, ring mod, comb filter, pitch shifting thing-a-ma-jig :)

I did just get this library, on sale: Freaktion



I could see part of one of those sounds being useful here. Maybe you have some library with metal sounds like that?

Man I don't know if I can help because I'm not just starting to breach this level of synthesis but it sounds like some sort of Audio rate modulation of the pulse width. I'll try and emulate it and see if that is what it is. Also sounds like an EG on the modulation source.

Way to go José. Close to my own thoughts!
 
If you have a spectrogram you should check sounds like this in one. They can help you see pitch and filter modulation.

One thing I notice is there's some pitch modulation that increases each time the sound plays again. Definitely a trickier one. Sounds like part of it may also involve some slight amplitude and filter modulation plus something like FM or RM as well. And of course an absolutely ton of saturation.

Also this is definitely two discrete samples doing a call/response. The 1st half is a generic-ish braam with a filter that opens and closes a little. that's probably just a sample from a sample library with a filter envelope...
 
Here's what I mean about a spectrogram...

The bright yellow lines along the bottom are the fundamentals & dominant harmonics. You can see the pitch bends happening by looking at the area.

You can also see that the 1st half of each pattern looks kind of trapezoidal, and reaches toward the top of each channel's display. This is the filter opening and closing on the "braam"-ish sound. (Timbral changes tend to show up as slightly duller, pitch/harmonics tend to show up brighter)...

This one is zoomed in on the 1st two, you can see the wobbly/quivering modulation in the second half Where I've outlined.

Yeah started fooling around with it. The basic of it is definitely Audio Rate modulation of the filter. It's also got some flanging, Chorus and reverb all heavily compressed.

To take it further I'd have to start to modulate the pitch of the modulating source (another osc) and that's proving to be just a little bit beyond my ability to think it fully through. I was able to increase and decrease the intensity by turning up and down the attenuation of the source. In soft synths it's called "depth".

So the basic of it is. Take one patch which is a square wave that's you braam sound then modulate that after it attacks with another osc controlling the filter. By turning up and down the depth you can control when and how much the modulator effects the filter knob. Run that sound through the Fx. I used the free Xfer OTT and the semi free Stillwell Audio (SCHWA) Oligarc.

I'm not yet as cool as your example but it's getting close.

Yours has what mine is missing. That definitive pitch to the modulation. Is that due to a self osc resonance also being controlled by the LFO?

Using an LFO to modulate the tuning is certainly one way to do it, and something I use when I'm going for a longer or more organically evolving type of patch. But since I wanted a higher degree of precision and a controlled evolution of the sound here I just drew in modulation on a few lanes (inc tuning).

Made in Pigments. (V2.. V3 has bugs in Logic at the moment...)

The pitch bends, and tone of the modulation in the response aren't quite there, but not the worst 1st attempt...

Too many steps to retrace TBH.
The dominant sound's wavetable, the The main gist is that one of the 3 Functions is more or less a Square wave that works like a gate; this switches between filters 1//2 for part of the call/response; that same Function turns LFO 2's amount on/off for the fluttering response effect.
LFO 2 mostly modulates the filter but modulates small amounts of other stuff like waveshaping.
The other two performers act like envelopes and open and close each filter a little differently.
Lots of little other stuff, mostly the result of me just dicking around...
Tons of distortion, some delay and reverb, parallel compression, etc.


I also still think the original's made from two separate sources. I hear a casa layered under the braam sound which suggests it's a sample, and the braam sound doesn't change as the pattern evolves but the other sound does... The distortion on the modulated/response sound also has a different timbre from the distortion on the braam...


What's this from btw?
My guess would be a trailer track, but see it being from a drum & bass track or game score as well...

I always loved Driver just never could use it well. Great job.
