Why can't I lasso notes in the velocity lane in Cubase!?

Hi, I am trying to grab notes in the velocity lane in Cubase. I'm holding option and drawing a selection around the lowest velocities and it highlights all of the notes. What if I want to make all the lowest notes of a part, lower? Please don't point me to the logical editor. I don't want to switch my brain to analytical mode while I'm writing. For editing drums, this is essential. What if I want to lower my ghost notes even lower or raise them and not have that change the velocity of other hits in that location? I could go in and select each one in the piano roll, do it for each one, but Logic and Ableton let you just highlight notes in the velocity lane.

EDIT: I made a logical editor preset that works fine, but there has to be a way to do this with the mouse.

If your doing drums. On the left whilst holding down control , click on the keyboard note in the display. It should select ALL of those notes. So say Kick drum is C1, Hold control and click on the C1 in the Keyboard ...Viola...al the C1's are selected.

But Logical editor is your friend

as is the manual !

Also:

Greg Ondo is THE king of cubase. If you ever get stuck search on youtube the problem with his name. He does weekly hangouts and everything gets covered.

Thanks for the tip, but that doesn't work. If you lower the velocities, it does it for all the notes. What if you want to keep high values where they are and only modify the lowest?? Only way is the logical editor. Why not just make it intuitive or give us both options? Don't make me think = Good design.

This is not the fastest way to do it for a whole song, but it's quick and easy for smaller parts:

Hold down the control key and click on only the ghost notes to highlight them. Then you can lower the velocities of all the selected ghost notes at one time by clicking on the little downward arrow that appears in the center of the highlighted notes (see 8:31 in the video above).

Yep, I get that I can do it this way, but that is slow and tedious. Why not just lasso all the lower velocity notes in the velocity lane? I'm beginning to see why I chose Ableton 15 years ago. I'm trying Logic and Cubase out and so far if I can get this function plus time stretch of midi notes in the editor window, I'm sold on Cubase. Logic has been a convoluted living nightmare to even record on.

I know where you're coming from, Jean. Cubase is the only DAW I've ever used, and yet I sometimes catch myself trying to lasso notes in the velocity lane because it's just a very intuitive way to approach the task of adjusting velocities.

i'm trying to get my head around what it is you want to do. If I select the arrow ( selector ) then whilst holding down Control drag it over the midi notes you want to pick out, then they appear highlighted below in the velocities . then go to the middle of the velocity window and drag down the tiny cursor and all the velocities go down ( or up ) by the same amount.

Right, but that will only work to quickly highlight a cluster of adjacent notes regardless of their velocity. What Jean wants to do is quickly highlight all of the notes within a particular velocity range. If it were possible to highlight notes in the velocity pane, then this would be an easy task.

I want to select them in the velocity lane not the piano roll. Grab all the notes that have a velocity below say 50 and lower them separate from the rest of the notes. If I make a selection it just grabs them all.

Exactly. I know I can make a logical editor preset, but wouldn’t it be great to just use the mouse? Also, I noticed no time stretch in the editor window. That sucks as well. What if I want to make septuplets or quintuplets. Can’t do it without the logical editor.

To lasso notes in the velocity lane, hold Alt-key and drag a lasso. Only the notes inside the lasso is selected. Invert selection if you want to edit the notes with lower velocities.
To make quintuplets or septuplets, use "Quantize tuplet" in quantize menu, set to 5 or 7 and quantize them. Set "Grid type to" 4ths if you need a string run with 7 notes on a beat etc...
I'm on a PC btw.

I tried the alt and then make selection and that didn’t work. I’ll look into the invert selection. Also, thanks for the tuplet advice! Part of making sick grooves is that tuplet swing.

Also, since you solved an issue for me that no one else has been able to(tuplets), how about one more? How in the heck do you record before and after a punch in punch out? In Ableton, if you set a punch range it’s always recording before and after until you hit stop. You can drag the clip out in either direction before or past the punch region. This is so ridiculously useful and Logic(evaluating it and Cubase at the moment) can’t do it easily. I tried for 2 hours today. Cubase has a preference for setting pre punch recording in seconds, but no post setting. That’s arguable more important so I can fade the events properly.

Awesome advice!

Arvfur's advice works. Hold Alt and drag your mouse horizontally through the higher velocity notes to select them, and then invert the selection.

To make pre-record longer, go to Preferences/Record/Audio. Default is 1 second. You can make it up to 60 seconds if you want.
Yep, I found that one earlier today, but what I need is post-record, like Ableton. In Ableton, you can loop a part and still drag out before or after. I know one can move the punch out point to a convenient location, but this should be a feature.

Edit: Found it! Also works for midi!

Using Pre-Roll and Post-Roll

You can set up a pre-roll and a post-roll for recording.

Prerequisite

Select File > Preferences > Record and activate the Stop after Automatic Punch Out option.

Procedure

  1. Set the locators to where you want to start and end recording.
  2. On the Transport panel, activate Punch In and Punch Out.
  3. Activate Pre-roll and Post-roll.
  4. Specify a Pre-roll Amount and a Post-roll Amount.
  5. Click Record.

Result

The project cursor rolls back and starts playback at the time that has been set as pre-roll amount. When the cursor reaches the left locator, recording is automatically activated. When the cursor reaches the right locator, recording is deactivated, and the playback continues as long as the time that has been set as post-roll amount.

  6. In the Pre-roll Amount and Post-roll Amount fields, enter the pre-roll and post-roll values.
  7. Activate Record.

Result

The project cursor rolls back by the time specified pre-roll value and playback starts. When the cursor reaches the left locator, recording is automatically activated. When the cursor reaches the right locator, recording is deactivated, but playback continues for the specified post-roll value before stopping.
