What's new

Catalina now?

I have a simple hardware setup: iMac, 4 core 4.0 Ghz i7, 32 GB ram, Focusrite Clarett 2Pre-USB interface, Nectar Panorama P6 keyboard controller. this hardware is fully compatible with Catalina. Software: Daw is Logic, I have many plugin libraries, mostly in full Kontakt 6.0. Now that Native Instruments has stated that they are fully compatible with Catalina (except for a few old legacy hardware items) is there reason for me NOT to upgrade to Catalina. My only non-Kontakt libraries are with East West, XLN Audio, Spitfire Labs and Spitfire SA Recording. Could some of my libraries not work with Catalina? Has anyone heard from East West lately?

if you dont have a compelling reason to do the upgrade, my recommendation as a developer is wait....being 6-12 months behind the OS curve is no bad thing in my experience. YMMV.
I couldn't agree more! Not to mention that an upgrade is going to disable a lot of 32 bit apps that I actively use.

play crashed for me quite a few times when i loaded a project in logic pro x and catalina.

i went back to high sierra. wont upgrade anytime soon. simply dont see a reason.

Not planning to move to Catalina any time soon. Too much software that needs replacing. Speaking of which is there an easy way to turn off those dumb pop ups telling me that such and such program won’t work under Catalina? Every time there is a security update I get the full run of them presented to me again. I’ve already turned off the Catalina notices via terminal.

Anyone know if the Spitfire plugin (labs, EWC, HZ Strings, etc.) works in Catalina now, unofficially?

It's the last thing holding me up. I think.

In the mac System Preferences pane, Software Updates option, you can turn off automatic updates.

That worked for me for a little while... but somehow the software is now ignoring that and the popup window saying "do you want to update now? or later? or tomorrow?" is back...

Apple is really pushing this update... but I'm resisting... I will keep selecting "tomorrow" until I'm good and ready and confident that everything will work, then ... I will upgrade.

I'm having trouble with my non-music Mac Book Air, having just updated. I couldn't even get basic functionality for days. So I suggest people wait unless there is some clear advantage of updating.

There's a way to turn off the Catalina update notifications in Terminal. Here's one article that explains how to do it:

For me the big incentive not to move to Catalina is I'll have to rebuy $100s of software that will stop working with the new system. Right now I don't have anything that requires Catalina.

This.

I have a policy never to upgrade to the next main version until about 9-12 months have passed since release. I’ve been burned too many times before with incompatibilities that this is the only thing that makes sense. 12 months after the OS release has so many obvious benefits that I don’t really understand why so many people jump on the new one so eagerly and hastily.

I just spent 3 days doing a full clean install of all my libraries, plugins and VIs on a new Mac where I have no choice but to run Catalina. 6TB later(!) the only ones not working are iZotope Ozone 8, Waves 9 which I'm not paying $240 to update, and ArtsAcoustic BigRock (which hasn't been updated since 2011).

Not as bad as I'd feared really. For plugins and apps that aren't yet properly signed/notarized, there's a bit of hassle with the security settings involving thousands of clicks on 'Run' (blocked), open Security Settings, 'Run Anyway', 'Open', 'Allow Access' etc.

No issues so far with:-

2CAudio, Acon, Arturia, AudioEase, Audio Modeling, Celemony, Eventide, Exponential Audio, Fabfilter, Garritan CFX, Heavyocity, IK Multimedia, Ivory, iZotope RX7, Lexicon, Liquidsonics, Native Instruments, Pianoteq, Plugin-Alliance, Relab, Reverb Foundry, SINE, Softube, Sonible, Sonnox, Soundtoys, Spectrasonics, Spitfire Audio, Toontrack, u-He, Universal Audio, UVI, Valhalla, VSL and Zynaptiq. Phew!

Everything's working fine so far. :) Analog Lab was the only thing that complained at install.

Thanks, everyone!

[Really, wanted the iPad integration, which I've been enjoying on my day job work laptop.]

For fellow Mojave users, I found this info on the UAD site extremely useful for disabling updates and also disabling the annoying nag notifications about it.

+1 for waiting as long as possible before taking the plunge!

I'm not sure if it was Catalina or the latest Logic update, but my performance have increased quite a bit!

* my single-core CPU spikes are gone
* substantially lower overall CPU load
*logic's reported latency is also lower

Though thinking about it, I was actually quite disappointed with all of the above before the updates. They didn't match the expected results from my machine, but now they do. Seeing it that way, it could have been that either of the updates just cleared out something that was causing the issues for me before.
