Hip-Hop Creator by Realitone/Mike Greene

Let me start off by saying I'm am not a fan of Hip-Hop...at all.

However: Any rhythm generator that allows me the option to Midi drop and drag has my vote (and money).

I'm a classical composer, but I love strong beats...unfortunately, I'm terrible at creating rhythms in the context of classical music. This look like something that will definitely help me in that regard.

Two quick suggestions: Regarding the 'complexity slider' and 'randomize' (which are really great ideas!), how about adding a Euclidean rhythm generator? That would be the ultimate (in my mind).

Also, adding some simple percussive orchestral samples might be nice: Timpani/woodblocks/wind chimes, etc (assuming they're not already there).

In any case, congratulations on the new release and much good luck!

So, let me get this straight;you like strong beats, and want a product called hip hop creator to help your beats, but you don't like hip hop beats...
As an ex DJ whoo played a lot of hip hop maybe you've touched a nerve in me!
Maybe it's because of the very hybrid, magpie natureof hip hop, which can sound like any genre with the right sample or production, that I hear this and question it...
As a fan of music (with a record collection in its thousands), I believe there's something of merit in every genre...

Yea he just touched a nerve in you... nothing more. The comment was benign. Still I am not sure that we should be sensitive with a person's likes and dislikes, ESPECIALLY when it comes to music (or women, or food, or alcohol choices, etc.). However, that seems to be a common symptom and none of us are immune.

I think the comment was a kudos on a software release that could have been irrelevant to the OP but ended up not being. That is a huge complement in my book.

I can’t speak to Mike’s offering as I’ve not checked it out, but what I’ve found works best for me is a combination of using drag and drop midi grooves from various EZ Drummer MIDI packs (triggering my own samples or layering them with the ezd kits), as well as a smattering of Max For Live devices. If you use Live, I can highly recommend Patter for generative stuff (two instances of that driving kick and snare make for some killer jazzy improv stuff!) and there’s a Euclidean one on maxforlive.com called Polyrhythmus. I think some of the sonic couture libraries also have Euclidean sequencers, like the Box of Tricks one or the Samulnory Percussion, if you want to go Kontakt route.

That is a huge complement in my book.
Exactly. I didn't say you shouldn't like Hip-Hop. In any case, thanks for the replies. Does Polyrhythmus work like a virtual instrument in a DAW (like Reaper)?

Re: Sonic couture: I'm aware of their offerings. Thanks for the suggestion. It's definitely on my 'to-buy' list.

My only suggestion, specifically to Mike, was that it might take a relatively small tweak to broaden the scope (and mindshare/marketshare) of a nice looking piece of software. Simply put, to more readily include classical-type composers as potential customers. (Of course, I could be wrong about the 'small tweak' business...I don't write software!)

Again, congratulations to Mike on the release of his software...kudos, dude!

If the instrument is capable of outputting MIDI to outside world, you could enable this in Kontakt's preferences and use it as a sequencer, triggering your own stuff in real-time.

Record the output to a track and then replace the individual notes with timpani/woodblocks/wind chimes, etc. samples at the same timing.

There are lots of ways to do that. I don't know what sequencer you use, but Logic and Pro Tools have drum replacement built in. You can do it manually very easily too.

If you do a search for "drum replacement [Cubase, whatever]" you'll find no shortage of instructions.

Unfortunately they're mostly videos, but there's there there.

Reaper: Yeah, this should work. Thanks!

I'd check if HHC can output MIDI first, before you go down the drum replacement route. That way you can just set up whatever percussion track you want triggered to receive MIDI in real-time from HHC/Kontakt. Curious to know if this works for selfish reasons too... ;)
