What's new

VSL instrument licenses vanished from e-licenser

That's why we recommend to purchase a new key every two years and to keep the invoice at a safe place."
Fuck this noise. How about VSL pay for their own damn copy protection scheme? It's not as if their libraries are inexpensive. I mean, come on. You are expected to pay for something that has NOTHING to do with you. You are buying a library in good faith and paying for the company's paranoia. If they want copy protection, fine. But THEY should pay for it. I have to wonder how much money they actually make on failed dongles that are past their warranty period. Don't customers have to buy the libraries again at half price or something? Why does anyone put up with this?

I wouldn't, haha. I just just quotingwhat Paul Kopf said... Buying a new 39$ dongle every two years I can live with that but the insurance thing, never.

i disagree. They have not changed their stance ever. The protection plan is case in point that they are unwilling to adjust their stance as I have stated. Instead they asked users to pay even more money to insure they don’t lose a penny to piracy.
Prior to this insurance (which is a brand new product for them) you had to re-buy all your licenses at 50% of the price. Given how expensive VSL is, this is an absolutely huge change from them. It's still BS, and VSL is still terrible, but if you have $10k invested in VSL then just pay their $35 / year "protection" money and move on with your life.

It's a garbage policy. $35! On one hand it's so cheap you're a fool not to pay it. On the other hand it's so cheap they should just wrap it into the cost of their libraries which are hugely expensive anyway. Garbage.

I guess I do get your point that they will always live by the motto "better a thousand customers walk away than one trick us into giving a duplicate VE Pro license". What a way to run a business!

All they did was share the cost around to everyone through insurance...they are still charging users to cover their own potential perceived piracy loss. They will not tolerate one lost penny due to piracy. Mind you, the mere fact that they are using elicenser, its EXTREMELY unlikely that it will be pirated anyway. But due to that very remote chance that someone could report their license lost or stolen when in fact they sold it to their buddy or gave it away....they had their previous policy to charge an obscene amount of money to recover the license...or now you can get the insurance so that everyone pays a little bit to cover the couple of times a year that someone loses their dongle and potentially could have been trying to pirate it.

Don't get me wrong, I intend to pay for it as soon as my dongle warranties end. Its not worth the risk of not. Just calling a spade for what it is.

hmmm. I was this close to purchasing Woodwinds SE. I think I'll keep away. Was never a fan of having all my EWQL licenses on an iLok in fear of magically losing them all.

Why pay for the vsl protection service (which covers one key for 2 years @ 70 euros) when you can buy a new e-license key for half the cost and apparently it is also covered for 2 years?

Covers loss or theft, other than that it's questionable. I've always been so fearful of losing my Kontakt licence so I'm paying insurance, ... ;)

Also the warranty does not cover if your house burns down or you run over it with your car or any other externally inflicted damage. It only covers device malfunction due to internal failure for any reason.

How can you lose a Kontakt license, it's tied to your NI account.

Hi everyone,

I recently was having some trouble with one of my elicensers and decided to move all of my VSL stuff to a newer dongle. Worked fine--I have my template on a single machine. So VEPro, Vienna Suite, FORTI/SERTI impulse responses, VIPro, and all of my instrument licenses were together and working fine.

I launched my template a few days ago to find that all of the instrument licenses had vanished. Just the VSL instrument collections and downloaded instruments. About thirty instruments.

VSL support tells me they will give me a "good deal" on purchasing replacement licenses, but I cannot figure out how this is the fault of my hardware, since the dongle is still working. The other sketch elicenser has since failed more or less completely, but I thought I was good.

Anyone have a similar issue or any wisdom?
VSL has a protection plan for the vienna key. It's about $70 euros for 2 years. I purchased it when I became aware of the protection plan.

I have to return here and say that contrary to what I said before, though I defence I have always been wary on the copy protection methods, I am now understanding the anti-dongle stance.

I installed Windows 10 1903 earlier today on both my Mac Pro and the PC, noticed that once I went to startup VE Pro it told me I have no licenses... funny that

Looks in machine at elicenser dongle and lo-and-behold it has died on me.
Everytime I plug it into the machine now, I get unrecognised device windows cannot recognise this... blah blah

So I essentially just puked £50 up a wall for this plastic key that in no way has any physical damage and the light comes on, but has apparently malfunctioned and rendered my VE Pro 7 license worthless!

- Lost 1x VE Pro 5/6 and 7 license

:(

UPDATE: I have notified VSL of the broken key, however I do not expect to get a replacement so I purchased an additional VE Pro 7 License anyway

Sorry to hear about this, i do believe this is a windows 10 issue:

Windows 10 upgrade or update disables Soft-eLicenser

Problem

After an upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8 to Windows 10 or after a regular Windows 10 update has been installed, the eLicenser Control Center displays the Soft-eLicenser as 'deactivated'. Applications which need to have a valid license cannot be started anymore. Performing a 'Maintenance' does not work to recover the Soft-eLicenser.

Solution

Please uninstall the eLicenser Control Center using the Windows routines (Control Panel > Programs and Features) and reinstall it using the latest available version you can download from here.

Alternatively, you can also start the existing eLicenser Control Center installation as an administrator by right-clicking the 'eLCC.exe' file in 'C:\Program Files (x86)\eLicenser\eLCC' and choosing 'Run as administrator' from the contextual menu. Afterwards, running the 'Maintenance' in the eLicenser Control Center fixes the deactivated Soft-eLicenser.

not sure if i am allowed this but hear some info

VSL has a protection plan
"Protection plan." I love that. It goes something like, See, we're worried people are going to steal our stuff, so we want YOU to make us feel better by buying a piece of hardware that does absolutely nothing other than hold your licenses. Oh, and you can also pay even more and add our protection plan, just in case that completely unnecessary hardware we sold you to make us feel better bombs out on you after a couple years. Because if it does, the thousands you already spent on our libraries will go down the drain and none of your stuff will work.

In short: "Bend over."

It's like buying a car and having to buy the key separately. And if you lose the key, you can't just buy a new key, you have to buy a whole new car. Unless, of course, you get the "protection plan" for your key.

In case of VSL I find their Protection Plan insulting. VSL should be buying an insurance that protects them from losses through piracy. Instead, they want everyone of their customers to pay them for it. Turning a horrible and unfair policy into a business is no way to treat customers in my opinion. But either they are oblivious of that, or they simply don't care.

I don't know. If my 8Dio libraries go bad somehow—if my computer crashes or whatever—I just open my 8Dio downloader and re-download my libraries. If my Spitfire libraries suffer the same fate, I do the same. In fact, I've backed up every single sample library I have multiple times, so they're always available to me. And the majority of them don't require any kind of licensing hardware or software or phoning home to get up and running. Imagine that. Yet, it seems to me that Spitfire and other companies are doing just fine. So what, exactly, is VSL's problem?

Paranoia. I'd be super curious to see the invoice totals from eLicenser/Steinberg/Yamaha since the start compared to a figure of what they would've had lost from piracy.

I'd like to see the invoices from dongle recoveries/library re-buying and their protection plan.
