Best Libraries for Non Symphonic Horns....

MOJO2 has been disappointing..but maybe i just need more time with them...not as easy to get results as compared to Orchestral Tools Glory Days, or Samplemodeling. 8Dio's recent Intimate Brass are nice too
I don’t understand, what exactly don’t you like about them.. sound, playability, or something else?

I’ll acknowledge that negative reviews of libraries can be attributed in part to user fault. I haven’t spent a lot of time with it lately because it wasn’t as immediately playable as other libraries that came out around the same time, and maybe because of this, the base sound of the samples just sounds synthy to me.

Yes... you're missing a library that can scream. ;) SHP covers a lot of bases, but not all of them. If I needed a horn part created with SHP to scream, I would consider layering Realitone Screaming Trumpet over it.
Ha! Just making sure it wasn't me being unfamiliar.

Some good hints here that I plan to put to use this weekend when reviewing final section parts for my non-orchestral brass and saxes. I had not had much luck with Session Horns Pro when I did my Komplete upgrade a couple of months ago, but I may have made some of the mistakes (or oversights) mentioned above. I simply couldn't get the dynamic range I was looking for, and as a result of that, the timbre I wanted.

I have used Session Horns Pro and Samplemodeling trumpets and trombones to good effect but often struggle to get what I’m after with them, even combined. I also have SWAM saxophones which can work very well but can sound a bit synthetic when very exposed.
I’m looking for another library to compliment them.
SHP is still a bit buggy and I have to bounce to audio if I don’t want to reload it when it goes wrong.
The split voice when played pp can sound really nice but there could/should be more control over the articulations especially the swells which can only be 2 beats or 4 beats! The muted trumpet is really good and I prefer the sound of it to the Samplemodeling mute though with SM you have much more control over the phrasing and dynamics.

Here’s Session Horns Pro doing what I think it’s good at.

Nice, thanks. The accompaniment sounds fine, but I think this is by far the best sounding virtual muted trumpet I've ever heard. It even sounds better than the impressive SM demo videos I've been checking out. Softer, more organic tonal depth and more soulful, mournful or something... How's the playability? Can it handle faster runs?

I'm pining for a high-quality Harmon-like muted trumpet and have been thinking of either getting the SM trumpet or waiting to see what Audio Modeling comes out with for brass (rumored for late this year). But the SHP sounds exactly like what I'm looking for. It's absolutely superb, at least in this specific musical context.

Yes, if it’s that sort of Miles style you’re after it seems to have nailed it straight out the box. And it can play faster passages well.
But unfortunately you have to choose either velocity or CC11 for dynamics so if you want to be able to crescendo using CCs you lose control over the attack.
The good thing about the Samplemodeling trumpet is that you can have velocity and CCs all working and interacting together which makes it more playable but it doesn’t have that gorgeous tone of the SHP trumpet.

Here’s a bebop style track with some faster passages that I did a while back.

There are two ways to make the most of the better libraries of this type that I know of. One is to compose to the samples, which unfortunately eliminates many stylistic possibilities. The other is an old rule that many horn players advise: make sure that at least one instrument is live rather than sampled. Next best, which has already been mentioned, is to add one or two very good virtual or modeled instruments, such as "The Trumpet." But live saxophones are almost always best, because most jazz and rock players use what I would call "mini articulations," bends and subtle changes of throat and oral cavity shape within articulations.
