Favourite Solo Woodwinds

Add a breath controller, and then you can fire the flute player! ;)
I'm a flute player myself what keeps me from firing the flute player. But I use AM woodwinds all the time. I also use Wallanderinstruments woodwinds as an addition (i.e. clarinet, bassoon). Breath- or windcontroller use is essential for me.

Man, it's too bad we don't have access to the original Berlin Woodwinds anymore. It certainly has its downside but for being recorded at Teldex, it does have a lovely upfront sound that can easily be used in either solo, or orchestral contexts. I don't know much about the soloist expansion other than some friends don't really like it but they haven't really said why. I never saw a need for it owning the main library.

Revive is less versatile in my opinion. I really liked the new content in Revive so I replaced the old BWW for it to use on this recent movie I'm working on. After writing the first cue, my boss basically said, "Go back to the original BWW, the new one just doesn't work as well." I didn't like the direction they took with the rest of the Berlin series after BWW. The other ones were far more wet sounding and much quieter. Even with the use of the close mics, there was a natural quality of the woodwinds that missing in the newer version. Oh well, I'm just lamenting about this, sorry.

In the right contexts, VSL's single instruments can do wonders. I really like the Clarinet 2 in Bb. Also, Embertone's Herring Clarinet is really nice. It has a very distinct sound and character so be sure to listen closely to the demos and walkthroughs as you probably won't get a different style out of what is demonstrated.

I've heard good things about Fluffy Audio's solo woodwinds but I've not used them to really give an opinion.

Best,

Chris

The 8dio Flute has a rather serious problem in its low register, I find, where it sounds more like the offspring you'd get if an English horn and a Nose Flute were to have sex. (https://youtu.be/Tj6G0vSrv8c (Isn't the human race a fantastic species?)) Its high register is really quite beautiful though.

BWW ruined things for me. By this, I mean that the gorgeous Teldex sound that comes with BWW legacy is just so good to my ears, that I end up using that as the main comparison point in my attempts to balance things with other libraries. And everything else just seems to lack that quality that they have.

For other reasons (space-saving, RAM-saving) I'm going to look at lighter options, but BWW will forever hold a special place for me. The sound alone is worth the money.

I just looked at 8Dio's Claire instruments, as I'd heard good things about them, but I can't say I'm impressed - I A/B tested comparing the clarinet and oboe in the Claire demos to that in the Kontakt factory library (2 of the better instruments in that library), and to me at least, there's insufficient difference to be notable. Again, this is where AudioModeling is in a different league. I don't have enough need to justify it as I don't use exposed woods enough so what I have gets me by, but listen to Gerald Peter here or here play their clarinet - the expressiveness of Claire clarinet is just nowhere near this. His performance with other woodwinds from AudioModeling is similarly impressive, and whilst his skills are incredible, I can say from experience that that's not a requirement to get a really good sound out of these instruments. In terms of woods, I only have the saxes and flute from AudioModelling, but if I'm ever in need of a clarinet, oboe or bassoon, this is where I would be heading to.

I made some examples of what WW-Sonivox is capable of. I am very eager to know your opinions. I have many different WW on my HD, but was just experimenting here.

The arrangement for Wind quintet of the piece of Ginastera I made myself, as try-out. The Ravel was available already, but don't know who made it. You'll hear all WW's seperately first then the full quintet (with the horn of course)
The Cimarosa is one of the finest works for oboe imo.

lovely post. I think with the latest update, their winds in general sound so much better than the early release, especially the flute. Oboe wise, i'm still not that fond with it. The vibrato just isn't clear enough
I agree about the oboe vibrato not being pronounced enough, so I decided to try and remedy that.
You can actually apply SIPS Vibrato to one of the script tabs under the hood in Kontakt.
Try it!

The Ravel sounds a bit harsh, but some EQ could probably take care of that.

I still regularly use a few solo WW's of Project Sam (like from loegria or the good old symphobia).
Concerning scripted vibrato...... I tried the one from Embertone with the Joshua Bell and well... No thanks, even if it might sound good sometimes!

The Embertone Herring Clarinet is a wonderful instrument. My other solo woodwinds are VSL SE, but I never used the VSL clarinet again after I got the Embertone.

That seems to be more or less a problem with most flute vst's. I've come to the conclusion that it's a difficult instrument to find the right mic for.
