Man, it's too bad we don't have access to the original Berlin Woodwinds anymore. It certainly has its downside but for being recorded at Teldex, it does have a lovely upfront sound that can easily be used in either solo, or orchestral contexts. I don't know much about the soloist expansion other than some friends don't really like it but they haven't really said why. I never saw a need for it owning the main library.
Revive is less versatile in my opinion. I really liked the new content in Revive so I replaced the old BWW for it to use on this recent movie I'm working on. After writing the first cue, my boss basically said, "Go back to the original BWW, the new one just doesn't work as well." I didn't like the direction they took with the rest of the Berlin series after BWW. The other ones were far more wet sounding and much quieter. Even with the use of the close mics, there was a natural quality of the woodwinds that missing in the newer version. Oh well, I'm just lamenting about this, sorry.
In the right contexts, VSL's single instruments can do wonders. I really like the Clarinet 2 in Bb. Also, Embertone's Herring Clarinet is really nice. It has a very distinct sound and character so be sure to listen closely to the demos and walkthroughs as you probably won't get a different style out of what is demonstrated.
I've heard good things about Fluffy Audio's solo woodwinds but I've not used them to really give an opinion.
Best,
Chris
