New SNES-like Sample Library: "Magical Box"

I'm not exactly sure how new this library really is, but I can't find much documentation from earlier than "fairly recently." I also don't speak Japanese...

I discovered them after their developer had liked a few of my SC-88 Pro demos on Instagram and noticed it's only $7.65 USD. That's super cheap!!

Of course, I bought it, and here are a few things that stood out to me:

1. The UI is really cute. Looks like a SNES controller, but also makes sense as an instrument interface (e.g., the four colored ABXY buttons are the ADSR controls).

2. Each instrument patch has its own custom icon artwork.

3. Making selections in the UI makes a very SNES-like "tweet!" selection sound.

4. The "Delay" gives a SNES-like slappy reverb; there aren't any UI functions I can find to tweak it but it's just the Delay insert in the Kontakt backend, which is easy enough to find and tweak if necessary. The stock 80ms is rather useable, though.

I still have to play around with it some more, but I think this is a fine addition to more expansive (and expensive) VIs like chipsounds and Super Audio Cart.

Interested to hear what you all have to say about it!

(I feel like this goes without saying, but I have no affiliation with this company)

For that price, and with the popularity of retro-style games in the industry these days it's honestly silly not to buy it as a game composer if you don't already have something similar.

A very nice gem you found there. Authentic sounds, simple but to my ears, it reminds me of my childhood.

Very, very cool. :2thumbs:

All the sound in the demos seems to come from the ff6 sound track ! Good stuff !

So, do I really need some weird "booth" or "pixiv"- account for just buying this? How did you guys do it?
Logged in with facebook. Btw, i really dig the sound of this, i have Super Audio Cart, and this seems way more usable than the SNES sound in SAC.

Oh gods, that's even worse. >.< I really need to think about this. I'm pretty anal on my privacy ("LOL SO WHY DO YOU USE FACEBOOK THEN") and have turned all those platform things off from my FB, so I must see what other options I could possible have.

When logging in you can see exactly what data they are going to access. If it is just Name, E-Mail and address, that's what you would give them anyway when purchasing.

We're always happy to help if you have any questions about SAC! I wrote an entire soundtrack (25+ songs) almost exclusively using the SNES bank so if you think this sounds good, I can give you some tips :)
Sadly i have the Logic problem at the moment, so i am hoping that Native Instruments soon figure out what the problem is. It is not that i think the SNES samples are bad, they are great, but often when i try to reach for stuff like this, i have very specific sounds in my head (more or less stereotypical SNES era sounds) and these just seems to fit better for those. I am sure they both will prove useful though, but at this price Magical Box a steal compared to SAC (not to put down SAC, it is a player library after all).

Btw, i definitely dig the tangledeep soundtrack! You did a great job on that. Also, the game seems interesting, i love RPG's and Roguelikes, so i'll probably pick it up at some point!

I forgot about this, I'll be honest I couldn't remember what this sounded like, but all hail midi metal gods

I think I messed with that because I planned on looking into a tab extension for reaper(for a friend) and I never actually downloaded the extension and completely forgot about it.

A question for the lads here:

This sounds truly, nostalgically sublime...

But I am a lot more curious about the exact synthesizers/samplers used in the SNES/Playstation 1/SEGA Genesis era than the library itself.

I'm planning on composing some variations on some of the themes at some point and would like them to sound as authentic as possible

Most notably the sounds used in the Super Mario RPG soundtrack are something I particularly fell in love with.

Anyone of you kind souls able to aid me on my quest? **<<Chrono Trigger/FF quest text!**
