Spitfire audio Studio Strings , how is the vibrato ?

I can't find the info or hear demo demonstrating the vibrato of this lib in depth ...
Is it just a simple cross fade between vib and non vib at each dynamic layers ?
Does the cross fade sound natural in legato patches ?
The vib expression in the virtuoso perf patch of solo lib kills , but I find the cross fade of 2 vib non vib samples in the symphonic series performance legato patch very brutal and unnatural.... how is it there in studio strings ? Any audios ?

I misread the post and thought you were asking about a different library, so deleted my reply.
 
Historically, I don't think SF has had any slow/gradual crossfade between vibrato and non-vib, but you can cross-switch on the fly (unlike what you can with Berlin Strings, where you have to select your desired amount of vibrato before you play the note). My assumptions is that they use the same solution here, but/and that possibly the mid level (between non-vib and full vib) has less vibrato than in SSS and SCS. From what I can hear in the walkthrough in Zoot-Rollo's post the vib sounds great - check out the violas from circa 7:50.

6:00. Non vib to vib on spitfire symphonic strings : awfull and so abrupt poor sounding transition (it is a like on off) for a 800€ product (that you can't resell when better new librarys come out in 2 or 3 years thanks to computer and disk speed improvements ) !! Oliver himself seems desappointed after this vibrato demo, they didn't reproduce the error to demonstrate this on studio strings but I guess it is the same crap...too bad this is the only week point but deal breaker for me. But they can do it :

1:36'' brillant progressive vibrato (they sampled 4 types of vib) with speed increase at the end of mod wheel , I m waiting for that kind of patch in all their librarys ( the virtuoso patch on solo strings rocks, even if you need 20 cores to run it ;). Maybe next year ?

Yeah I think this is progressive vibrato articulation, they often use this in demos : just playing 2 hands with full vib witch is progressive vib, so it appears shortly and smoothly after the attack of the note . Makes the trick for rapid playing lyrical style , dead for emotive slow style where the bad cross fades force you to go fast on the mod wheel and have poor sounding on off result ( for these products at least).

always a compromise with this stuff.

i think it sounds great.

i've held off with Spitfire until recently (BF - The Ton).

excited to grab a few things this week, and dive into the Studio Series at a discount.
 
Not so sure. Amazing to state, as SFA Libs were almost automatic adds over past couple years.
Far out alternative …. Afflatus …. looming as notable reduction from available bitcoin as end of 2018 promo-season approaches.

it's just another tool.

i'm not going to agonize over it, my time for buying this stuff is drawing to a close.

it has been an incredible year.

i owe everyone here a debt of gratitude.

Afflatus : great inspiring tool , but no expression control from vibrato and dynamic layers ( I didn't hear any dynamic cross fade on legatos and sustains, mod wheel seems to act as CC11)
Not much KS too so it's a concept that the inspiration comes from the patches and you deal with this , or load tons of patches if you have an idea to perform and know how to trick with them to obtain global dynamic and expression. The concept to record intentions given to the musicians is good, but each single patch seems very limitated in terms of expression range you can get from it ... so to me it's good for idea starter or quick compressed finished mixes .

Which preset is this with? According to the manual, 32 of the presets have 3 dynamic layers, and many have two layers. But there's no separate vibrato control.

Well I listened again here

Maybe I can hear slight timbre change thru dynamics on longs but it s subtle ... I find those of Spitfire more expressive. I think that this lib has lots of different sounds to use in mix , not in too nude or exposed solo contexts.

The performance legato does come with a price in exchange for its extreme playability, vibrato being an on/off switch being one of them. But to be fair to Spitfire, you also get the legacy legato patches which has proper legato crossfades through 3 different intensities and in many ways sound better, just less convenient.
