What's new

Sonokinetic 12 days of Christmas - Day 12 - Largo 50% OFF!!

Has anybody used both Watchmaker and 8Dio's Clocks and can compare them - strengths and limitations of each? (This question might not be allowed in the Commercial Annoucements section but I think it is here.)

Have both. 8Dio clocks is larger clocks, where watchmaker is smaller, pocket watch type ticks. Some nice sounding mechanics in 8Dios and more to choose from, but I really like how Watchmaker has custom adjustments for things like swing- both sound good. At 9 euro it's an easy call (I think I got clocks at half price too). They add nice percussive ticks for action cues. :)

FYI Stormdrum 3 from East West also has some nice clocks, but ethnic Perc drums is it's main thing. Cinesamples Tonal Ticky Tackies also has many hi-hat replacement sounds that are similar. The two libraries you mentioned are probably the two best out for clocks right now though.

Hmmmm.

While this is probably the biggest deal of the year if not one of ‘em (hello 8DIO Lacrimosa/Cage Brass!), I’m sure I don’t need this as I already have the NI Symphony Series Woodwind Solo & Ensembles Pro & Essential versions.

However even though Symphony Series it has a lot of articulations and I love the interface I’ve always felt it’s never been a very expressive sounding library.

I will say that this super deal has made me revisit Symphony Series and I actually seem to like a lot of things that I’ve overlooked about it which I never really had much love for.

Still I think the room in Sonokinetic WW sounds a lot better to my ears and more flexible to work with as I usually have to crank up the close mics and drop the main stereo mix with Symphony Series as there’s too much room/reverb baked in and not dry enough.

I think the 2 libraries are actually quite similar to some degree but probably overlap too much...and honestly knowing my lack of discipline I probably wouldn't take the time to learn all the under hood key switching/assigning with all the other libraries I already have to spend time with.

I’m actually waiting to see if Spitfire will come to the rescue is a few days. I’ve been wanting their woodwinds more than any others for some time. They usually offer up a pretty good collection or bundle deal if we already own some other libs.

In this exact situation, did you make a decision yet?

LOL! Are you sure you want to agonize for another 24 hrs? :) there have been way too many good deals this season.
No ;).

Part of me thinks it's too good of a deal to pass up, the other part of me thinks it might be too redundant to what I already have. If my DAW PC was up, I feel like I would have the ability to make a slightly more informed decision, but I'm still on the fence.

this may sound silly but I'm thinking one of the biggest differences between NI and this library is the user interface and the way that the articulations are accessed. Not sure which way is better but it may make a noticeable difference. At first blush, I want to say that this library may be a little easier to customize articulations than NI, but I'm not sure.

Do you have the full NI woodwinds or just essentials? NI has a soloists pack, too, whereas Sonokinetic's is just ensembles, so that's a potential difference. I've been trying to figure out how many dynamic layers the Sonokinetic instruments have. My sense is that it doesn't really reach into ff territory much less louder, but maybe I just missed the demos that illustrate this. I only have the essentials for NI winds (they came with KU11), and haven't done anything but play them a bit, but they also does not seem to have the forced tone of the higher dynamics (in order to maintain consistency of tone I imagine). The ensemble is generally tighter in the NI essential patches as well. As I mentioned above the looseness and tightness of the ensemble is a bit of a taste thing, but the looser ensemble might have worked well with, say, the Arks if the the Sonokinetic ensemble winds just weren't so darned polite!

This one is tempting, but to be honest, it's most probably something that I am not going to use that much for the kind of music that I make. I already have enough libraries that I am not using for that same reason. Let's see if I can manage to stick to my new years resolution this time around...
