Cubase Multiple Key Editor Windows. How do I hide?

A hopeful Cubase question...

Is it possible to have 2 Key Editor Windows in Cubase 9.5.41?

The scenario...

I record some Midi information on an Instrument/Midi track and have the key editor window showing full screen on a second screen (main screen showing Project Window). Then, I record Midi information on a different Midi/Instrument track but I want the Key Editor window on the second screen to remain open whilst recording. The reason why, is so I can look at the parts I have just previously recorded. It's just useful for me to see what I just played when writing (currently I screen shot parts and flick the screen shot on a separate screen which is less than ideal).

What happens currently is that as soon as I record on a different track, the new recording shows in the Key Editor. Obviously the Key Editor shows the previous Midi data when I hit record but as soon as I stop recording, the new track midi data shows. It does this with Re-Record mode as well.

I seem to remember there being an option to "Unlink Editors" but can longer see that. Maybe it was a figment of my imagination?

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks!

Jono

EDIT...

So now I know how to have multiple Key Editor windows, I was wondering if there is a way to hide all the windows with a Key Command or Macros? I'm thinking a button exactly like the Windows "Close Plugins Button". It would be very useful!

I think it's this you need -

Preferences/Editors/Editor content follows event selection

Oh my god. That is exactly want I wanted! Seriously, thank you! I have no idea why it wasn't working when I tried this stuff the other day. So happy now! Thanks again man!

So it turns out my imagination wasn't such a figment! Good ole Steiny for changing the name haha! And yes RTFM, I have, and try to on regular updates but funnily enough searching for Link / Unlink Editors doesn't show up. ;)

Really helpful of Steinberg to change it :2thumbs: I'm not even sure how I knew myself, I think I must of trawled through the preferences at some point looking for 'link editors'.

BTW one of your videos got me onto 'Paste at origin' which is incredibly useful & a big time saver, so thanks for that ;)

I've just created a Touch Screen button to toggle the "Editor Content Follows Event Selection" as it's very useful to have the editor and Event linked but also, for the scenario I wrote above, incredibly helpful to have it turned off. I am so excited I no longer have to "screen shot" midi parts. It feels like I moved from the Medieval period to a Future world haha Thank you!

Yeah, Paste at Origin is a godsend. I'm about to make a new video on my latest template workflow which is very streamlined compared to what I have shared in previous videos so perhaps it will have something of use in it.

@jononotbono when you use this function, please let me know if you expierence what I do: when you have “editor follows event selection” turned OFF and you leave the 2nd key editor window opened, save your project then quit Cubase. When you reopen the project, is the “record in editor” button in the upper left of the key editor in a window or the lower zone now turned off?

I asked because I’ve been using this same method for years of turning off “link editors” to use a 2nd key editor to read from, and since Cubase 9 introduced the “record in editor” button in the key editor, it’s been a huge pain. In Cubase 8.5 and earlier, if you had the editor window in focus, you could record in that window; if you didn’t want to record in that editor, you didn’t have it in focus.

Thanks!

I will certainly check for you later man. Currently in the middle of problem solving a network problem with a touch screen and have to deliver a template to a client later so it will likely be this evening but I will definitely test it for you.
I also have a button on my touch screen to toggle the "Record in Editor" so if my news is bad news then perhaps thats a work around to save time. Or throw your computer into a river and give up music. One of the two.

Thanks, Jono. No hurry on checking this out. Just whenever you have the time.

I do have a key command for enabling “record in editor”, and I’ve even set it up as the middle button on my mouse because it happens so flippin’ often. However, my point is I (personally) don’t know why Steinberg added the record button in the key editor to begin with. It’s pointless and creates more unnecessary steps.

Ok, I can confirm that this happens to me as well. Not sure what can be done about this. Looked in the manual but that's not helping.

Concerning this conundrum, I don’t think there’s a way “hide” the windows except by using a screenset. If you’re wanting to “close” all key editors then I’m not sure if there’s a command for that. I do know there’s a command to open/close just the key editor, but that may trigger whichever version of the key editor you have selected in Preferences (ie, open in window or lower zone). There’s also another command to “open/close editor” in general which opens/closes whichever editor you have in focus. So maybe you can rig up a macro out if these?

Going back to the “record in editor” turning off, my issue is I have three displays locked to a screenset with the key editor window constantly on one display — which is why I am plagued with this ridiculous issue.

I just posted this on the Steinberg forum:

I tried a few tests on this "record in editor" function, and it seems that it doesn't matter if you have "editor follows event selection" turned on or off at all. If you have the key editor open in a separate window (not just the lower zone), save the project, then quit Cubase, the "record in editor" button is turned OFF. The only way it stays ON is by saving your project with it ON in the lower zone and the key editor window closed.

So I'm guessing this is a BUG and I really hope Steinberg either fixes this or removes the "record in editor" button altogether.
