Cubase in OSX

Hello guys,

I have a 2 windows 10 pcs (slaves) and a 2013 mac pro (high sierra) main daw setup.

Only recently I got to use everything connected.

I'm using a lot of kontakt instruments, a few play instruments and 2 UVI instruments. I connect everything through VE Pro 6.

I've done a lot of tests, all with the same results. In the last one, I didn't have any plugins nor any VI in the main computer.

Even so, Cubase is unstable for me. Especially the first time I open the template after a reboot. I have to make lots of attempts (I just receive the message that cubase quit unexpectedly) before I can load the project.

So Cubase is really unstable in OSX or is there something wrong with my system?

I'm thinking about selling the mac pro and move even the daw computer to windows.

EDIT: It is stable if I don't use the slaves.

I have a very similar setup to yours and Cubase is a rock. Only difference is my DAW machine has 2018 hardware. What are the specs of your main DAW computer and are you running the latest version?

Hello Jmauz, are you on OSX for the main DAW computer?

Mine is a 2013 six-core mac pro. I only updated the ram by myself (to 64GB) the rest is the stock config.

High Sierra - latest version / Cubase - latest version / VE Pro - latest version

If you don't mind, what are your computers specs?

I run Cubase 9 on my 2013 MacBook Pro (with a Windows slave), running High Sierra, and it's also a rock. It could be a bad plugin or something; maybe even bad Ram?

Thanks! In my last test there's no plugin besides VE PRO on the main daw computer and the problem is still there.

How can I check the ram?

EDIT: It is stable if I don't use the slaves.

My main DAW is a Hackintosh 8700K with 64GB ram. Slaves are both machines I built some years ago so the hardware is older...circa 2014-2015 or so. Both have 64GB ram, buttloads of SSD's, etc.

If your setup runs without issue until you connect to your slaves then I think you have your answer. Start cross-referencing the hardware in your slaves with VE Pro and see if there are any incompatibilities. My guess is it's a networking issue...either a NIC or the switch. Or a cable.

This issue is driving me crazy! Since yesterday I've done more tests and couldn't find the reason.

The main issue is having to "try" to load the template multiple times after a reboot (cubase quits unexpectedly). I don't have to many crashes after it loads.

What do you avise in terms of network cards? I'm using the Ethernet ports from the motherboards connected directly to the network ports of the mac pro (2013).

I'm not using a switch either.

My slaves are:

I use a switch to connect my master DAW (Mac Pro 6.1) to my two slaves, and manual ip addresses on all 3. Maybe you could try that. Also remember that all VEPro software must be same version.

I do everything as you described too (VE Pros 6 all with the same version and manual ip adressess). The only thing is that I'm not using a switch at the moment.
 
Have you read the VE Pro users manual? I recall it being quite specific regarding how to set up the network. Furthermore, search the Vienna users forums; I remember getting some recommendations for NIC and switch models that people are using without issue.

Yes, I did. I setup everything by the manual. Didn't look into other forums yet.
 
I'm using CB on a nMP (High Sierra) with and without slave PC/VEPro 6, with and without switch and static IP or DHCP...rock solid all around.

I'm starting to think that my mac pro (2013) is the problem. I had issues with it in the past, but it passes on all hardware tests that apple does....

If everything works without your slaves, as you've mentioned, i doubt it's your Mac.

At the moment, i'm collaborating with a composer who's using CB 9.5 on a Mac Pro (2013) with High Sierra and 4 PC slaves/VEP6. Everything is going through an HP non managed switch, nothing special.

He writes, mix (5.1), sound design...10 - 12 hrs a day. His PC are on all year round with all libraries loaded. The rig is rock solid. I'm at his place practically every day for the past 4 months and never seen it crashed.
 
I’m running cubase 9.5 on a single mac pro that is identical to yours. None of the problems that you describe. I jave a 1700+ track template (disabled tracks approach) and everything works quite well. I did have troubles before but it turned out they were because of PLAY. Since getting rid of PLAY instruments evrrything runs well. Hope that helps
 
I can tell you that some weeks ago - before updating to Cubase 9.5.40 I had a very stable template about 800 tracks with all strings on one MacPro 5.1 and all orchestral perc on another MacPro5.1 and the rest as disabled tracks on my DAW MacPro 6.1. After updating to 9.5.40 everything went crazy, the cpu peaks was hitting every 45 sec. even when stopped. It turned out to be 1 instant of Altiverb 7 on my bounce bus, that needed an update. After updating everything is fine. So that's how even a small issue can turn out to be FATAL !!!! :eek::eek::eek::eek:
I use a unmanaged switch from D-link, buy the best use cat 6 or 7 cables.
