Hard Targets - Short Metal Track

Sure Alexander that is fun to do from time to time, I do take also some breaks with different styles. In term of mixing the piece sounds a little bit closed, I would try to open it in term of space.

Nice pieces. As to the mix:
-Imo the bass is too loud.
- The right channel feels a bit empty/left channel is dominating.
-Rythm guitars could me more powerful. Nothing is more powerful than hard panned guitars tracked more than once.

Oh cool guys, I will check that. Thanks. Yes, the bassguitar is very prominent, I know, was done a bit on purpose, maybe I overdid that.

It sounds good! Just messes up the balance for me :P
Another one. There seems to be a lot low end coming from the bass, maybe tame that a bit.

Damn..my mistake I forgot to pan the one of the 4 guitars..thats the reason why the left pan is more prominent. Thanks a lot...dude..

Here, a bit less bass guitar in mix and the panning is now corrected with the 3rd guitar..thanks a lot..my ears were already deaf :D Hope that is better

There you go
Only thing I still here is a bass build up. Not sure how much of that is due to my room. But as far as I can tell my ears would like to have a more precise and controlled bottom end. Imo try multiband. Is your bass highpassed?

No highpass here, regarding the build up, bassguitar has some good amount of sub there.

I personally am a fan of highpassing the bass if it comes to more agressive music. Of course just somewhere in the sub area.
Imo there are parts where the bass looses its thump and the sub becomes blurry, if you know what I mean.
Here we go:

I automated the bass a bit and I side equed the lowend sligthly to get rid of some left and right noise, also the guitars should have a bit more impact now. Thanks again for all the great suggestions here.

Hej Guys,

Although I am spending most of my spare time doing orchestral studies from time to time I am still doing some metal stuff. Hope you enjoy that simple tune. Had some fun with that one.

I was wondering if straight up metal is being posted here from time to time. Glad to see that is the case. Good stuff, sounds fat and tight!

Can't really comment on the mastering. After hearing something long enough everything sounds ok to me mixing-wise.

My humble thoughts on the composition: I feel like the main riffs are being used a bit too much, in the sense of "If everything is cool, nothing is". Under the solos I'd try dialing it back to something simpler so that the riff hits harder when it's coming back. For the intro I would try to create a bit more of a tension arc that ends with the mainriff as payoff, right now it feels a bit like I'm getting to the intense parts too soon. Though that may be part of sub-genre conventions that I'm not too versed with. I mostly listen too other shades of metal.
The lead guitar parts are all cool, but I think I wouldn't start with the harmonized version and save that for the second time around.
Have you thought about developing the main riff into a twice as long and more clearly "different" version of that melodic idea to break up the pacing a bit? You've done something along those lines at 1:36, personally I'd do make that break a bit longer, and I would leave out that short lead guitar sound at 1:36 because it sound to me like I'm about to get a solo (since a new part was marked by the riff), but I'm not getting one.
Just my two cents... You got this, and it's pretty cool already as it is!

My feedback was based on the first dropbox link. Didn't listen to the new one you just posted yet.

By the way, have you ever seen some black metal being posted here? Search came up empty for me.
I'm sure 5+ minutes of non-stop tremolo picking must have many fans around here! ;)

There is indeed a long version of the track with that longer bassguitar /drums section:

But extreme or black metal is posted here not really much...

Nice, I like the longer one better.

I see... is that stuff posted anywhere in a music composition comment and critique context? Going by one documentary I've seen, the kind of blackmetal that I'm interested in seems to mostly be made by people with very reclusive lifestyles and not interested much in talking about their writing process.

Speaking of which... do you do piano sketches for metal? I tried that a bit recently to figure out some harmonies beforehand as a guideline, and was positively surprised.

I don´t do piano sketches for this kind of tracks, it is not JW impressions where I do that. So here. Grab your guitar and start jamming, thats how this track comes along..

Ok, the panning things helped.
I still find the drums being apart of the others instruments, there is reverb on the snare that build the 250-350 Hz area and make of it boxy. Visually if I close my eyes I see the guitars close and wide and the drums in a very narrow room far from me. Maybe I'm fixated with an ideal blend which you are not requiring! I liked the long version.
