What's new

Garritan Personal Orchestra capable of epic music too?

From the future
Hey guys! I know GPO has a good reputation here, and it has got a very decent price.
Can it cut through in a mix with electronic music, and can it do the big epic?
If yes, do you have any demos I can listen to?

Hopefully a few examples come together!
The demos on the website show more the classical side of things - still a lovely sound.

By the way, for all users, is the Aria Player a pleasure or pain to work with?
And I guess GPO has modwheel expression?

Thanks in advance! :)

GPO is a good value basic orchestra. Similar to Komplete's offering. But in my personal opinion not for realistic mockups.

I hope I don't get hate now, but I only use it for playback in Notion. I'm sure you can get better stuff out of it, but for anything "epic", I'd rather look at Metropolis ark, or if on a budget, Composer Cloud by East West has Hollywood Orchestra.

GPO owner...It can do epic, but don't expect OT Ark 3...SAM brass is nice, percussion is nice. I love Aria's built in effects. VERY easy to use. Modwheel yes. (See VPO, below, for more modwheel expression fun).

Suggestion: You may want to add the following cheap/freebies:

I mostly agree with this, but the added Garritan Orchestral Strings in GPO 5 are pretty gorgeous, and certainly as nice as even the best string libraries out there. I wouldn't hesitate to use them in a mockup.

I still use the GPO Cello solo 3 on occasion for something different. I'd never go back to that though, most certainly not with the EW, SF, and OT libraries I possess.

Still, it might work terrific for some folks, more power to ya!

one of my first try with garritan and epic metal, more than 10 (?) years ago:

all with garritan (the orchestra!)

Sure it can - it's not the best for epic, for reasons already discussed above, but the strings are quite nice for electronic and pop stuff, and being in a mix with electronic stuff helps cover up their lack of detail. The smaller sections can be very, very useful. Harps and pianos arenice, too.

I usually label "epic" with heavy and big brass and percussion... GPO has some nice brass /percussion patches and, if you combine it with Garritan Instant Orchestra, you can surely achieve something decent.

this was another try:

combining GPO and GIO

later, i realized a final version with also other sounds from kopmlete ultimate 10 library:

(dont' remember which sounds are from GPO/GIO, but they are there!)

Aria is really simple to work with, no problems at all. and GPO was amongst the first libraries to introduce the modwheel as expression and the sustain pedal as a legato emulation.
there are also several other midi controls that can be tweaked to enhance realism but they are software-related, not sample-related...that means, for example, that the machine gun effect is avoided not by using round robin (different samples for repetition) but with slightly detune/different eq/use of nearby samples.

That's the beauty of GPO. It's easy and really good for sketching. It works well in modern genres.

Quick and dirty demo of the Garritan Orchestral violins, now included with GPO 5. I have neglected these for years. Didn't realize what I had.

are these from the garritan orchestral strings additions in GPO5?
did you use the legato function?

Correction. Yes, these are from the GOS addition. No, I didn't use legato. They are strictly sustains. I originally thought I'd used a legato keyswitch, but when I looked back at the file, I realized I hadn't.

Here's a version with legato:
