Rescore - Blue Planet 2 Trailer

Blue Planet 2 is still on my to watch list and also have not heard much of the original music, but if this was completely underneath it I would enjoy it a lot. You did a fine job there Ashton! Lovely subtle writing and very nice and effect colouring.

Hey guys, I recently finished watching Blue Planet 2 and really loved it, so I thought I'd have a go at writing a piece inspired by the show. I'd love to hear your thoughts. :)

Cheers,
Ashton

Very nice sound, I would believe it's original score. The beginning reminds me of The Bible soundtrack ;)(0:08 to be specific).

Hi Ashton, Thanks for sharing.
Sure I won´t comment on the music that much. I think that´s not that much my cup of tea here and before I comment any nonsense regarding how to do a zimmer style, I keep it to the things I know better. I feel that the build up should be somehow the other way around, it feels that your track has more momentum in the beginning than in the last parts which I am not sure, it is matter of choice and style. I would preferred a bit more momentum in the end and I mean more what you did in the beginning. A little side note. Your last chord which resolves I think to D Major, sounds not quite right to my ears, I mean the resolving chord by itself is fine but the voiceleading of the upper note, I think its missing a violins on a D4. Not quite 100 percent sure though. However productionwise I think your track could benefit from a bit midrange to be honest. I know its sounds silky and nice with that bathtub, and so you have a lot of lows and highs, but don´t forget your midrange. The Shorter strings feel also more upfront than the long notes very noticeable at 53 seconds. Apart from that, well man.good job.

Ashton, did you deleted your last comment? Tell me if you have a problem with what I said. If so why. I wanted to add some notes but after seeing you deleted your initial response to me, I am not quite sure if you really are interested in what I say or not.
Just let me know, no problem but then I won´t spent any of my time in commenting to your tracks if you anyways don´t feel my comments are worth to you. Thanks, man! ;)

I absolutely appreciate your feedback for sure. Any feedback is appreciated. Not sure what happened, if you have any additional notes, please attach them.

Well yesterday you said that already, then it must be a miracle but somebody deleted that comment. Ashton, all is good. I am here not about who is wrong or right, I have just made a statement and opinion. But what happened to your comment, I dont know..:D I will get a coffee and with more notes then later (I think there was something minor)

Sounds good dude! Love the string arpeggios, nice booms with the picture and good textures.

It does feel a little scooped in the mids, but maybe it’s too much compression on the master bus? I too love a nice silk and zero harshness ala Desplat but something sounds a little squashed or scooped. Maybe look at your master chain?

Would love a walkthrough on this!

Thanks dude! I’ll for sure take a look at the mix. I think the strings (con sord longs) are what’s occupying a large portion of the mids in this specific cue so that could be the source, because there’s no compression anywhere on the track, including the master bus.

No it is not the compression which scoops the mid imo here. Over compressions sounds different..imo it is too much attenuated or cut with eq. He shoud bring back a bit the midrange. When softening the midrange just a little, the room / space would benefit from that too. Mid / side eq can lead to better results because you can maintain having still the center mids.

Dude, love it!
Using woodwinds, yes!
The big booms are getting a tad old imho, but it works.
Listening without watching; the climax comes a bit early, it would've been nice if, for instance, the theme was recurring at the end. Something Alexander (sort of) points out in a not-concise way.
But I understand you wrote this to picture, so you can definitely ignore this.

Great job overall!

Best,
