Smooth CC curves with Duet Display

Hey guys and gals!

Here’s a quick QoL tip: if you have a spare iPad, you can use Duet Display as a second monitor and take advantage of the touchscreen for CC editing. My faders aren’t that great for tracking automation so I use the tablet to smooth curves out. I’ve been doing this for a while - it’s fast, precise and does wonders to lessen the strain caused by long sessions.

Hope this gives you ideas and improves your workflow. :)

Thanks for posting this! I just replied to another thread I started that I was going to try Duet. Your video makes it look like it is really responsive. Much cheaper than an MTI2 Raven. :2thumbs:

The poor man's Raven :roflmao:

It's very responsive, I can't really notice any lag. Just make sure you use the 60fps and Energy Efficient modes, for the best performance.

The only downside compared to something like the Raven is that multitouch is limited to two-finger gestures. Not an issue for me, as I use it for basic midi editing.

I was reading some reviews and wanted to ask if you had to purchase the pro version or not. $14.99 plus $19.99 gets a bit steep, but maybe worth it.

Hey I really like using the duet display + Apple Pencil on my iPad Pro 12.9" It is fantastic for writing CC. As your video showed @zolhof your finger will work just as well. I believe you have to pay for the pro version if you want Apple Pencil support though :/ but to me totally worth it! Ive also used it to play the picture I'm scoring too.

Yup,..
Got the 12.9" Pro with the Pencil too.
Sometimes I'll keep Kontakt on it so the pencil lets me adjust tiny sliders and such on the library GUI.
I did have Duet take a dump on me last week and realized that I had "Update Automatically" set. It took me a few emails before they agreed to send me a link to the previous version.
Now it works like a charm.
The big plus IMHO is having a good excuse to buy a very cool toy!

Unless Steinberg revamp Cubase with touch support in mind, the added features in Duet Pro (palm rejection, pressure, hover) won't make any significant difference. But if you have an iPad Pro + pencil and use other touch softwares, I think it's totally worth it!

The non-pro version will allow you to drag and resize notes/events, pinch to zoom, two-finger scroll, draw EQ curves, fader/knob automation... for more precision you can use a decent stylus like the Adonit or Inutos.

Do you know StrokesPlus? It's a free Windows app for mouse gestures and it works great with Duet. I have some basic gestures for undo, redo, tools selection, snap, copy/paste, transpose, etc. It's really handy. :)

I purchased Duet and am having a sh!t time with it. :( Screen resolution is all messed up, I'm thinking that my resolution of 2560x1080 is not Duet friendly. Also, getting what I want on the screen (eg CC automation data) is not working out well, but it could be related to the screen resolution issue. I'm sending in a support ticket and will see how it sorts out. I have high hopes!

I have a setup using 2 mac pros and a PC. I use sharemouse as well. I tried Duet Display with my ipad pro and it was a total fail. It's not ready for complex setups.

thank you clisma! Astropad is awesome. Setup was literally (and I am using the word literally correctly), the fastest setup of anything in the history of my usage with technology. It is extremely smooth and works very well.

FYI it didn't even burp in my setup which includes 3 computers and 5 monitors using sharemouse. No conflict at all, thankfully it works completely independent from sharemouse so there's no trouble.

Great to hear! While Duet Display works reasonably well for me, Astropad is just smoother and more flexible. Glad it’s working out for you.

If anyone is using osx 10.13.6 High Sierra, Duet won't work with this particular version of HS. The Duet folks say that it works with 10.13.3 or Mohave.
Sucks since 10.13.6 is a sweet spot for Pro Tools 2018 and Mohave isn't approved for Pro Tools yet.
