IMac Pro being discounted

Things that make you go wtf? If this is a discount approved by apple and real, it's pretty much unprecedented isn't it?

Base model + news of intel chips de tune. Means smart buyers aren’t going to buy until new chips come out. So they either need the likes of high end 18cores now or can wait for next gen chips. That’s my guess. I’m going to wait on all computer purchases till new chips come out.

Macs are generally not discounted, or very little, and as far as I know never this soon after introduction. Is this a surprise?

No. Most people I know who need powerful iron, a decent workstation, that have been holding off buying a new (Mac) machine have either moved to a Windows PC or they are waiting for the new Mac Pro that Schiller and Federighi spoke about during their Mac Pro mea culpa press meeting back in April of 2017. The saying "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me," comes to mind.

Even with this 4 grand reduced price tag, you can buy A LOT of PC for that kind of money. Granted the iMac Pro has a nice built in screen but pro users by and large want a machine they can upgrade and add cards to. Pretty simple and Apple messed it up beginning in 2010 to 2012 when they began their internal designs on the Trashcan Mac Pro.

In other words, Apple isn't selling many and it goes FAR BEYOND the price tag.

If you read the article this is the second discount within a week. Apple has an earnings report in a month's time, so I would suggest they are trying to boost revenue for this item so they can bring up the unit sales and revenue in the Mac unit.

That's what I thought, to the extent that iPhone has much more to do with their bottom line than anything else. Hoping those currents are all good... :)

I don't think so. The currents affecting iPhone sales will be far more important, like sales in China, information about pending orders from suppliers, etc.

$4k for an entry level iMac is a discount?

$5k is definitely too much money, but $4K for that machine doesn't seem unreasonable. It should probably have 64GB of RAM for that price, but by historical standards I don't find it totally outlandish for a machine with that monitor, a 1TB SSD, 32GB.

The same can't be said of the current Mac Pro, but the iMac Pro uses all the latest components.

This is crazy, indeed! I also found a big German Apple reseller with an offer of the entry level IMac Pro for about 1000€ below the usual price (including VAT it is 5500€ - at Cancom 4500€). This could mean Apple will be less restrictive on price policy of their Pro segment! Yet, I won't jump at this offer either, as the entry level machine is of not interest to me and the upgrade prices for memory are still ridiculous. But it could be a good sign for the next Mac Pro ...

That's what happens when you don't paint a pro machine in pink.

that tends to be when i worry

So you think they're headed for a crash? Why? I know next to nothing about stock valuation, but their P/E ratio is 19 vs. an average of 53 for all of Nasdaq. In other words, they're selling stuff inside out and upside down.
