What's new

What do you think the next big fad will be in sample libraries?

So we're getting to the point of massive oversaturation in the hybrid market which means developers are going to start shifting focus to what will become the next big thing in sample libraries.

In the past few years we had trends of drum libraries, solo strings, pianos, everything epic... I know I'm forgetting a bunch of things. Hybrid has been the biggest but I think it's going to start piddling out soon in favour of a new popular sound.

So what do you think the new hotness will be? What are you secretly hoping it will be?

Style libraries: Libraries containing the basic sounds you need for a specific style, not limited to an instrument group. Like Projectsam's Swing, Stretzov’s Balkan Orchestra and others.

My guess is more lo-fi indie sounds. Also not-so-secretly hoping this will happen, cause I've already recorded samples of a Commie-era electric 12-string hollowbody guitar.

So far this seems most visible in drums, with highly processed lo-fi drums and drum machines which try to sound more organic. Also seen some drums recorded in unusual spaces, like huge warehouses, but not sure if that counts. Going beyond drums, Soniccouture seem to be one of the companies at the forefront here, with things like the Imogen Heap signature instrument a while ago.

I hope people will discover real instruments and raw playing on it... and libraries will not be in fashion it will be dead. Kontakt will be used as coffee machine...

Yeah, I definitely hope for more of that kind of thing. Those two libraries are some of the best buys I've done in recent years - and I don't even use them much for their designated style.

Hoping for this as well. Anything that will soften up the too perfect and in tune sound of sample based tracks. Looking forward to hearing your guitar.

Thanks Spitfire for all these libraries that let non-composers do the job! It's fantastic someone could get 1 minutes of evolving music in the right mood pressing a single key!

Not sure I follow? I didn't know Spitfire made phrase based libraries?
