Magical EQ or snake oil? I've made my decision.

Hey Controllers,

As creator of The Samplecast I get a hell of a lot of sample libraries and plugins thrown at me and they all have marketing blurb which shouts that they're the "next big thing" or "groundbreaking". I always hesitate when phrases like that are thrown around.

A fortnight ago I was sent a plugin by a company called Sonible who wanted me to make a walkthrough video for their frei:raum plugin, which claims to "fix" EQ problems and a whole bunch of other things. Suffice to say, I was my usual sceptical self.

To say that this plugin has impressed me would be a massive understatement.

I've already used it to kill the room ambience on vocals, remove baked-in reverb on orchestral samples, to fix EQ problems with my master mix and many more things. To me this plugin is truly magical and well worth the 80% off discounted price of $59. No hyperbole this time - it really is THAT good. I'm happy to put my endorsement behind it.

Try the demo and be blown away too. Details HERE

This looks seriously impressive from the walkthrough. Anyone else thinking it could be used to remove the Air Studio sound* from Spitfire libraries so you can use your own reverb on those and others to blend them well?

* not knocking the Air Studios sound of course, I was just thinking of the difficulties many face when using them with other libraries.

Thanks. Seems like it could be a time saver and great for resurrecting old cues.

I asked in the other thread - but why not here as well? How effective is this on something like a string or woodwind quartet? I think it looks great on the demos and reviews but they have so far been with more rock/pop/edm type material. Not so much on chamber music :)

you cannot remove it but you can reduce it. i've used it a lot on solo instrument recordings and vocal (speech) recordings where you hear ambience of the room. that works great. a big hall with a section of instruments you can reduce but not remove entirely without artefacts. the EQ is great to dial out room and body resonances.

How about pulling back room reverb from conferences/public speaking with Proximity? And do you notice any artifacts in the sound afterwards? Not setup to try it at the moment.

Thanks!

i went looking for some files this morning to try exactly this - but could not find them. Will look again now

Could qualify?

I was looking for something much much worse :)
This just needs a bit of tone correction - which frei:raum would be great for. However I did try it on some archival recordings of Aboriginal Australians, made under fairly difficult conditions in the bush. Definite improvements using all three processes. Have not compared to RX for the same file. My impression so far is the smart eq and proximity in frei:raum are subtle but easily worth it.

Just a heads-up, but either use a throwaway email account, or be prepared for Sample Logic/Kirkhunter/etc. spam to your email if buying through APD (they're owned by Sample Logic who actively share email lists between the various companies they're involved in).

I'm not sure using a throwaway email account when you purchase software is a good idea. What about future updates and improvements? Also, how will you remember your burner email address when you inevitably have to request a new download from a company after switching computers etc? Personally I always prefer to give my real email address and then just unsubscribe if the marketing stuff becomes annoying. Not sure about other countries but in the UK any email marketing has to come with a simple one-click unsubscribe button by law. Haven't had any issues using this.

I don't use throwaway email for any of this stuff, but I do use "compartmentalized" email, an address that is ONLY for misc. audio-related mailing lists. It's loaded into a separate profile in Thunderbird. I have different addresses for personal, commerce, PayPal, social media, work... This way, I am not inundated with with Stupid Deals of the Day unless I'm in the mood to see them.

BTW, I couldn't agree more about this plugin. I demoed frei:raum and decided to buy it within the first 5 minutes. Utterly unique, impressive & amazingly useful tool that does all three special things it does astonishingly well. Beyond that, it's UI and features are exceptionally easy to grasp immediately & intuitively. 10 Stars!

Great to hear that you're finding the plugin useful. As I said, I had initial misgivings about it but it's now become such a huge part of my workflow. At this price it's really difficult to pass up and I reckon everyone should give the demo a go to see what they think.

Hey! Thanks for prodding me to go to site and get Demo !! Had not occurred to me with current APD offer.
Downloaded now and can get onboard.

FINAL HOURS of this deal. The feedback on Facebook, VI Control and other forums has been overwhelmingly positive. Make sure you don't miss out as after tomorrow this deal price will be gone forever. All details HERE

Dammit, reutunes. Here I was, blissfully ignoring that deal that didn't look especially intriguing from the teaser e-mail. And now because of your post, I had to go and check the thing out. And then buy it. Here I am trying to be judicious about my to-be-spent-on-Black-Friday-sales dollars, and now this. I'm a newbie here, but I can already see that this forum is going to be a pain in the ol' bank account. o_O

Thanks for the tip-off. Try not to do it too often, okay? ;)
