CineStrings Core 1.3 update

yea the legato sounds bit synthy but cinesample's tone has always impressed me.

Too bad I have SSS already though.
 
I think the 'synthy' aspect to the faster legato sound is probably that it isn't a true "fast transition" sample. I am guessing that they never recorded faster transitions in the first place so they are limited to scripting the original standard speed transition in order to shorten it to give the performance flexibility they are wanting to achieve with this update. I could be wrong, but the reason I never got this library was the lack of different legato speeds and styles for that very reason. I believe Will Bedford worked on this update and I've used some of his older libraries from the Northern Scoring Tools days and his legato scripting on those were very flexible and and easy to perform legato lines with. I don't know how much of that type of scripting was used in this update but if it's similar, it will certainly make this update a lot of fun to perform with. But, like any library, you have to learn how their legatos work in order to get the best out of them.

I too am not a huge fan of the legato 'sound' I'm hearing in this but compared to the old v1.2 legato that Mike plays in this video, 1.3 sounds waaayyyyy better to me. If it sounds better and is easier to play on a keyboard, then this is a huge step in the right direction. Good updates are always welcome.

They would have said had they re-recorded faster transitions. These do sound better imo, but still not on the same level as the competition.
 
It sounds a bit like how Hollywood String legatos sound sometimes (depending on patch and dynamics), where if you stack a few of the legato strings (eg. V1, V2, Va) and have all players change notes at the same time, you get a very audible spike in volume and tone change at the legato attack point... really not too flash IMHO. It's the main reason I stopped using HW Strings... I just got sick of the legato attack sound. CS Core sounds even more emphasized. They do sound a lot better now than 1.2, I will say that. Still not enough for me to be too interested in getting them unfortunately. If they had good legatos, I would certainly be interested, because they have a very vivid tone that is so much different than Spitfire.

That accented legato patch he played though... yuck.
 
Did they do anything about the close mics panning ? I really like CineStrings as well but I have not used it much yet, because the close mics are just impossible to center, unless you mono-ize the track. Which is ugly.
 
My experience with cine strings the last time I tried it was that the only thing I really had a problem with is when the dynamic is lower than cc#1 = 90 it seems as if the first note of the legato starts very softly and crescendo up to normal but if you transition into the 2nd note after the first immediately then it's like the first note was marked pp and second forte with no crescendo... does anyone even know what I'm talking about?
 
I can't seem to remember how to do the update, and I couldn't find a description on Cinesamples' site. Is this meant to be a "patch" update, or is it a complete replacement for the old library? I've downloaded all the files via their downloads app.

New patches and NKR. Same samples as before.

Hmm, that's what I thought, but does that mean I should point the installer to the existing Cinestrings folder? (IIRC, in Spitfire's case, they are quite adamant that you should point to the folder *above* the folder of the library when updating). The download was like 44 gigs or something, though, so something must be off somewhere?

I believe there's a separate 'updater' package, which should be a lot smaller than that. I'd suggest opening a support ticket for help with installing.

congrats on your scripting mr Bedford,but two major requests for cinestrings in the future....
a)can we have the sforzando as accent overlay back(as it was in v1.2)?
b)how can we assign the shorts articulation volume to velocity and at the same time leave the accent overlay volume to modwheel-assigning the modwheel to control the accent overlay's volume doesn't seem to do the trick

Just got a new email this morning for the 1.3 update, does that mean the fix is done? I downloaded and updated to 1.3 the day before you posted. Oops. It seems the 1.2 patches are still there, so I assume I can use those.

Got the same email regarding the CineStrings CORE v1.3 update, and wondering if I should go ahead with the update ? or wait for the fix version ?
 
Hey guys,

Wow you're quick, we weren't ready to announce monday, but see you found the YouTube video :) We did put the update live on Monday for testing (with no public announcement), just making sure everything was 100% before announcing today (both with the installer, and the patches themselves.) So yes, go ahead and download now!

The quest for the most realistic legato is always ongoing. This latest update, we hope, gets us closer to that goal. Thanks as always for the honest "vi-control" feedback.
