Some dark december music

Hello people,

this is my last composition for this year(I think), and I feel like it somehow sums up the things I've collected so far. It was an instant composition over last weekend, it somehow came out very natural, without revising many parts. Maybe there are some additional percussive highlights missing, some gaps to be filled, but I wanted to keep it as it came out. If you're a romantic woods-stroller like me, I hope you will like it:DD

I enjoyed your use of woodwinds. What libraries of the winds (brass and woodwinds) did you use? You have great command of the VI art form. I also like your work - Adagio (cinematic String Only). Good work. You are a very Impressive Talent.
:2thumbs:

The painting is appropriate for your piece! Incredibly moving and moody composition. Wonderfully rendered as well. Overall... the best composition that I've heard on VI-control. Take a bow, sir!

Hi Jorgo,

I love it, this is what I am aiming to achieve with my music. Can you explain how write and arrange? I mean do you start writing a melody and build on it? Or do you have the complete idea pretty much from the beginning? From a production point of view, how do you mix it? Do you use EQ/compression on individual parts?

Ohh i love the bells! Awesome...

@rlw Thanks much Rod! I use Berlin Woodwinds and Hollywood Brass Diamond(+Metropolis Ark 1 Brass for mostly any other pieces I'm working on. In this case I didn't need them though).

@LamaRose I don't believe you, and it's certainly not true, but I thank you anyways!:D

@PeterJCroissant Thanks peter, listening to your track, we seem to have a similar preference in some way.
I'm pretty messy while arranging, unfortunately it's hearable in most of my pieces. At first there is a certain mood that I want to create, something like "I want something woods-y with a half-romantic flavour"(pretty abstract). Then I try out a theme or motif. Sometimes there is a cool one at the beginning sometimes you create one by chance and decide to abandon your composition and build a new one around this certain theme.
I'm 99% using the mouse and write the notes down while humming them e.g. The same thing I'm doing with the counterparts, like harmonising a chord in an a capella group. I usually don't record parts playing the keyboard, just piano or some messy harp stuff(but glissandos, I'm still typing them, still have Vienna SE Harp:D).

The arranging itself is really painful because it's mostly proof-reading many times. I often decide changing the order of parts, I often write the ending at the beginning of the composition and try to work the composition towards it. But overall it's always really the most unpleasant part...

I use compression on the high strings just as a slight boost, EQ on the highs (because CSS lacks some). Then the usual lo-cut on hi Strings, WW, Horns and Trumpets. I'm not touching the EQ/compressors that much anymore because I feel it makes everything worse. I try to improve the mixing with every composition as a side-effect but I mainly focus on composing.

Cool! The only problems I had were a) the annoying entrance of the horn at 1:10 and b) the overall too dry sound of the piece. The latter (if not both) problems can be cleared up with some engineering...though to be perfectly honest I'm wondering just what you're aiming to convey with that pesky horn (both times I listened I questioned its placement in the track and overall reason for being. Perhaps substitute it for another instrument or at least mix it in better).

Some nice reverb would take care of the rest, both on select instruments as well as (just a pinch) on the bus.

Otherwise, there's a lot to like about this piece! :)

Haha well, now that you say it. Maybe it really is a little bit off... but I think I wanted it to sound more vulgar at that point.
I always start with more reverb and end up lowering it to a point that it might be too dry. I will definitely focus on that , I just feel when adding more it is just too unrealistic ? Not sure ...
Btw, best nickname and pic !

Lol, thanks! He is a sexy guy, isn't he? :whistling:

Well, if your aim was vulgarity, then I think you accomplished that, as the horn sticks out like a sore thumb imo. But you know...if you messed with the predelay on your reverb for that instrument, you might end up happier with it. It would almost certainly make it blend in better. Just an idea. It does seem as though blending in wasn't entirely your intent of course.

just listed in studio, sounds even better! If its ok Parsifal I am going to respectively disagree, i like that you can here the tongued entry(so to speak!) well, sure you could loose a db or so perhaps...but to me its like a pain...you know perhaps a sharp sudden pain? im probably reading too much into it...

also i experimenting with this, maybe this is some thing one could try..

Is it horn at 1:10? I thought it was a trumpet...Either way I liked it , it reminded me of Shostakovich.

I actually liked the drier sound... it only adds to the 1940's/50's vibe. Just as good the second and third time around!

It was a trumpet. But I think parsifal is right. It sounds a bit weird. :D But at that moment I liked it.

Yes, I'm trying to find out a good spot between dry and wet leaning towards dry. Maybe I should use the cubase reverb again that I was using when I started composing. It had a stronger effect while being dry.

@PeterJCroissant Thanks for the link, I'll be checking this one out soon!
