What is best: Many separate VE or one housing several VE?

I try to figure out what is best: One VE for each instrument like A:



Or like this B:




In A there are only one midi port and 2 audio channels allocated each instance. All instruments returns on their own separate audio channels.

In B I have to have at least 2 midi ports (32 channels) and ca. 16 channels of audio pr. instance.
What is best?? In terms of latency & cpu use.

I run C8 the same as I ran LPX...you get more mileage that way. However, I put all articulations on one instance so that I can recall them with a channel change. Therefore B is the way you want to go.

DP likes to have as few instances as possible. Logic like it spread out.

I use Cubase 8, but I also tried DP9, Studio One 3, Logic Pro and PT 12. Keep coming back to Cubase 8 even though I really would like an update to address all the issues. Thought that Cubase 8 would run smother if only one VI was put into recording mode, instead of an instrument that holds a lot of VI's.
Does that makes sense?

Exporting audio slows down the more instances you have also. However, in some circumstances you will find that more VEP instances distributes the load better. I use it to minimise the Kontakt tempo spikes and it works well here. ymmv of course

I use many instances with logic, but I run into problems with the instances connecting. Haven't found a way around it, but it's irritating because one of the points of VE Pro is to avoid long loading time. Idk maybe I'm being too much of a diva!

Are you sure? I had connection issues, and changed my NIC to a separate network, disabled all other network adapters, and it lowered connection time with 80%, in both Logic & Cubase.

Are you actually experiencing any performance issues?
If not, just go with what compliments your workflow the best.

For me, the large instances work best, as I make good use of VEP's channel set function and build up my templates in a modular fashion.
If I know that I want Albion III in a project, I load 1 VEP instance, and then load my 'Albion III' Channel set. Done! Routing and all.

Guy Michelmore uses very large instances with Digital Performer I believe. This allows you to mix easier in VEP and have your plugins loaded on your slaves.
Of course, you can use plugins in VEP with many small instances too, but you'd be constantly changing between instance windows to see what's going on.

I think Cubase 8 is very good in so many aspects, but I'm really tired of the CPU spike problems, and that's why I try to unload some work and put it on VEPro. I wish that my DAW would allow me to work more with music and less with technical details.

Oh for the day VSL introduces the grouping of channels that can be displayed in tabs, making it far easier to work with large VEP instances. This might make the need for multiple smaller instances obsolete.

Yep I'm sure. I know this because different versions of Cubase can have drastically different load times for the same projects. Also, I'm currently using only instances on my master so no NIC to fuss with (but back when I was using slaves I spent months optimizing the network). I've noticed with the newest versions of Cubase that when you add instruments to the project there there's a significant delay while it loads (and my OS is on SSD so that's no the problem) so I figure that that delay is also present when loading the projects resulting in longer wait times. When I manually connect to an instances there's almost no delay.

I use 6 instances. 1 for Each Slave I have. So Instance one is Slave I, Instance 2 is Slave II etc.

Each Slave is hosting in quad and then I have TONS of outputs engaged in Cubase, per instance in the VST rack.

This works the best for me. Keeps all my plug-ins in one place, keeps me making adjustments in cubase, vs, Vepro since I have everything coming in as separate returns.

There's no difference between connecting to an empty instance or an instance with plugins; VEP communicates the same info to the plugin in Cubase when connecting.
