| PCI-324 too old. |

So, I was extremely happy to upgrade my Gigastudio machine to an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66. I added 4Gigs of ram and an additional 500gb sata HD.
Then, I got to the studio today and installed my PCI-324 /Motu 1224 audio interface with much anticipation, only to discover in much amusement that my PCI-324 card won't be recognized.
I tried swapping slots (the MoBo is an Asus P35 SE/EPU which only has 2 PCI slots, the other ones being PCIe), messing with the bios, installing the drivers with and without the card and finally gave up. It seems that the card is just too old and I'll be better off upgrading to a PCIe-424, which means US$339.95 w/shipping to my place, and an additional 2 weeks of waiting.
Since I gotta upgrade, I was wondering if there where any other interfaces that would seem like a better alternative than the MOTU. (I already use motu interfaces on my Main DAW and the 1224 would then turn into an expansion on the main system). The new PCIe RMEs seem nice though a little too expensive. I also looked at the US-122/144 but I'm not sure about USB. Any ideas? |

I acquired a US-122 for the express purpose of being able to use GS4 on my laptop, and with XP64 in 64 bit. In my experience of it so far, that it runs through USB isn't an issue. It works fine with GS4 in 32 bit - the one real issue is that while it has working drivers for XP64, the GSIF driver has not been updated to the necessary 2.1 spec for 64 bit functioning as yet.
Hopefully this will be rectified soon.. |

I have an old us122 also and noticed its 64-bit gsif driver is v2.0 and isn't recognized by gs4 on xp64. But the same driver install prog is recognized on a 32-bit system. Go figure. Unfortunately, I doubt it'll ever be fixed.
Also have a fw1884 and its fine with xp64 and gs4. Its rock solid but I don't know how much longer it'll be supported. My portable rig uses an RME ff400 which is also a little pricey but well worth it and well supported... the mic preamps and converters are surprisingly high quality and rme was the 1st implement the 2.1 gsif driver, even before Tascam released their own. The fw1884 is a control surface and has automatic latency compensation in the driver, but the rme stuff has way better internal routing and the ff400 can function as a stand alone mic preamp with the most flexible mid-side recording and monitoring options I've ever seen.

The only interfaces I KNOW to work in GS4/x64:
RME HDSP9652
RME Raydat
TASCAM FW-1804 (discontinued)
Some people have problems with the FW-1884. The USB interfaces are iffy. They all work fine in regular XP, but x64 is more particular I guess. |
